"I love you Mel!"

I gaped at him. He just said he loves me! As in LOVE me!

I took one long look at him. Then, I turned on my heels and ran, as fast as my legs could muster. I ran out of the school building, out of the compound in the direcion of my home.

I ran up the front steps bursting the door open.

"Mel, what's wrong?" Mom asked standing up from the couch. "Shouldn't you be in school?"

I ignored her. I ran upstairs to my room, slammed my door shut, crawled on bed and dragged the covers over me, curling into a ball. Mom's worried voice called from outside, but I paid no heed.

I AM NOT GOING THROUGH IT AGAIN!

All my hard work in going unnoticed went to the dumps!

I did everything possible to draw the least attention. I stopped- looking attractive, going out with friends, doing makeup, wearing stylish clothes, covered myself with hoodies wherever I went, cut my hair short, everything to not make myself attractive. Then why did this happen? I wanted to get away from it; away from LOVE, never to do anything with it!

Tears started pooling out staining my cheeks, bringing back those horrible memories that I'd sealed in a Pandora box deep down, which I'd no intention of opening. The lock on it just broke and everything seeped out.

Two years ago, me, a thirteen year old, new to the wonders of teenage, adolescent hormones only beggining to make its appearance, was like any other girl. A girl, fresh in a world of fantasy and dreams waiting for her prince charming to make his debut in her life. And as the world provided her with all that she needed to draw him in, her wish was finally, one day, fulfilled.

Jack Rhodes was the prince charming in my life. My- first love, knight-in-shining-armour, everything. I was happy just being in his presence.  Jack was the guy any girl could ask for- handsome, funny and everything that comes with the package. Me, being the idiotic and stupid child, tagged along without knowing the repurcussions of falling in love.

Six months into my love life, I was madly in love with Jack.

It was the seventh of August, Jack's birthday, the day he turned fourteen. The day  that forever scarred me, leaving me a gift no one can ever receive- the fear of love, molding a child who fears love.

Jack'd invited everyone from school for his party. I was really confused on what to get him. By the time I found him the perfect gift, it was already late into the party. I searched for Jack everywhere. But, couldn't find him. Since it was getting late I thought of leaving the gift in his room. I went there, only to stop dead in my tracks. Jack was making out with Senna Martins, a girl from our school! The gift fell fom my hands, breaking as it hit the floor. The sound made them stop, only to stare at a shivering, confused me at the door. Jack didn't look surprised or guilty like he should've had when your girlfriend catches you getting on with another girl. Instead he just said, "It's over Mel. I'm done with you."

Tears streamed down my cheeks. I hoped my eyes were playing horrible pranks, that it was just a bad dream and I'll soon wake up from it. But it never was. It scarred me so much, that it instilled a fear of love.

I snapped back into reality when a slight knock sounded. Mom's gentle voice followed.

"Someone's here to see you Mel."

I went over and opened the door coming face to face with a dishevelled and injured Liam.

"Oh my God Liam! What happened?" I asked shocked.

"I was confused by the reaction you gave me earlier. I asked some people and they told me what happpened with you. I know it's two years late, but I did what my heart told me because I can't stand anybody hurting you. I just wanted to say that. And yeah, I'm always open for you and only you."

He then turned around and walked out. I stood there shocked. He tracked Jack and beat him up? Well, Liam's condition definitely pointed to that. I mean, just look at him!

"But why?" I accidentally said aloud.

"Because he loves you."

"But Mom, love leaves a scar in the end."

"You're still a child Mel. You have a whole life ahead of you. How much longer will you linger in fear of love? You're a strong child Mel. Beat it!."

My mind scanned everything my life went through realizing the bitter truth in her words. She's right! I'm stronger than this. I'm Mel!

"Now go catch him before he gets too far," she said reading my mind.

I nodded.

I ran outside. I took a random direction having no idea where he went. A little while later, I spotted him walking down the lane.

"Liam!"

He turned around, his face lighting up.

"Thanks."

"For what?"

"For making me realize I'm strong. That I'm worth someone."

He smiled.

"Mel. You are worth it. Jack was a fool to not realize it."

"I know," I said with confidence. "I have you to thank for, for making me fearless, for giving me hope, a new reason."

He took some steps towards me.

"Can you make some room for me in your heart?"

His entire face beamed.

"It's all yours Mel," he said wrapping his arms around me.

"I love you Liam," I said burying my head in his chest.

I'm ready now, to change my life and start a new one. One devoid of the fear of love. One that has no place for fear.

A world that we'll walk together, where I'm a fearless child and where Liam will never leave my side.

A world feeling fearless of love!
