I care

'You never told me you had a brother.' Erin looks up at him with her eyebrows raised, waiting for an answer.

'Yeah, well.' He pauses, taking a sip from his beer. 'Didn't think you'd care.'

Erin lets out a sigh. She rolls her eyes in annoyance because she has heard that phrase a lot ever since they ended whatever was going on between them.

'Look, I'm not blaming you, Erin.' He looks her in the eyes. 'And.. I already told you. I get it. You don't have to explain yourself to me. I totally understand.' He puts his beer down on the table and signals Herrmann to come back with 2 more.

Erin looks at him with gratitude. 'Thank you.' She tells him. Because those two little words mean a lot. It's a thank you for every single time he was there for her when she needed him. A thank you for having her back every time they do raids. A thank you for paying attention to some details about her that others wouldn't bother to notice. It's a thank you for just being who he is.

'I should probably head out.' Jay sits up and gets his jacket off the stool next to him. 'It's getting pretty late and Voight wants us back to the district tomorrow morning.'

'Yeah, I'm just gonna finish my beer and go home.' She says, taking a sip of the cold drink.

Erin watches him go to their friends' table to say goodnight. He gets a few replies in return, shaking hands with Ruzek. The door closes behind him as the cold air of the night makes its way through the door and into the bar.

A knock at the door startles him. He opens his eyes slowly, taking in the surroundings and squinting at the bright light coming from the TV.

He wasn't expecting anyone. So when he opens the door and sees his partner standing in front of him, it comes as a total surprise.

They don't bother to exchange pleasantries, or at least she doesn't, as Erin pushes her way into the apartment, leaving Jay confused.

'Well, why don't you come in.' He says sarcastically, closing the door behind him.

She sighs. 'Jay...you and I both know that, well, we haven't really..been the same.' She sits down on his sofa.

Jay raises his eyebrows. He still doesn't understand the meaning behind her words and asks for further explanation. 'Meaning..?'

Erin closes her eyes for a second and takes a deep breath. She was surprised by her own sudden decision to visit Jay in the middle of the night and she still hasn't thought about what to say to him next.

'We don't hang out anymore, at least not like we used to. And I hate that.' She pauses and looks deep into his eyes. 'I hate it because that's.. that's not us. And I want us to stop tip toeing around each other.'

'You really came all the way here to tell me that?' He replies after a few moments of silence as he sits down on the couch beside her.

"Yeah. Why is it so hard to believe? I miss our game nights and every time I speak to you there's this tension between us. I want it to stop."

"So, let me get this straight." He sits on the end of the couch. "You break things off and now it's still you who tells me that we should stop being so awkward with each other. Am I right?"

"Jay, I've already told you once. Just because I don't want to lose my job doesn't mean I don't care about you." Her voice softening as she says this.

"Yeah, maybe that's the problem, Erin. Because I care." Jay looks into her green eyes. "I care more than I should. And believe me, I tried. I tried to..just.. deny that I have feelings for you. But it doesn't work and that's because I keep lying to myself"

"And I think you are doing the same." They stare at each other for a long time without saying anything, until they both feel like the distance between them is too big.

His lips are on hers and the fire in them finally gives out. Their kisses are like fireworks and every touch burns their naked skin. They've waited too long for this moment to happen once again and they don't want to waste it.
