Blue eyes stared at me as the words left my mouth; her eyes somehow reminded me of a rainy day - thundering and rumbling. Her hands were frozen on my forehead where she had been wiping her lipstick away. In fact, her entire body was frozen with the exception of her eyes that blinked too rapidly to comprehend the information she had just received. I could hear her heartbeats quicken and march with an irregular rhythm. She was confused and shocked, frightened too; I wouldn't blame her since I had just told her that every mythology she had ever heard of and every creature she saw in a fantasy movie, existed in our world.

I carefully watched her as she searched my eyes to find any confirmation. Then, a deep frown overtook her features, her sculpted eyebrows knitting together and her scarlet lips turning downwards. She hadn't realized yet that my hands had smudged her lipstick, and her expression was a clear indication of her lack of interest in correcting it.

"Wha-what? Ho-how?" She stuttered, fear laced in her voice, then shook her head in denial. "No! You-you're lying."

I wanted to roll my eyes that very instant but I refrained from doing so. She was clearly panicked, and with the thunder of conflict churning downstairs, I had to keep her calm. What did they want anyway? I recalled hearing something about twins and the curse, but couldn't grasp much with Meliora breathing too hard against my hand.

"I'm not," I said as softly as I could, knowing in full that any kind of harshness with her could lead to chaos. Reading the confusion on her face, I could tell she was trying to connect the dots and failing miserably at it.

"But, I-I was un-unconscious. How did you..." Seeing how she struggled to talk, I interrupted her by placing my hands on her shoulder.

"I'll tell you everything you need to know. But for now, I want you to stay calm," I told her.

I made her sit on the chair by the window so I could hear clearly what was going on downstairs. She immediately grabbed the glass of water and took a big gulp of it, still processing everything. Seeing she had visibly relaxed, I concentrated on listening to the conversation downstairs.

"Give us the girl and we'll be on our way." A deep, throaty voice said. I could hear the gruffs of two others, indicating the man had company.

"The girl's with us, Xavier, and she's not going anywhere," Art said, his voice firm and deadly.

Xavier. I repeated the name in my head. I had heard that name before, but I just couldn't remember where. Perhaps an old enemy? I automatically assumed that they were asking for Meliora; Scarlet and Daya had been with us forever. If they wanted either of them, they would've come before.
