Work and Winston

"Kaylie!" I heard a yell coming from the kitchen. The door from the kitchen swung open and my boss walked towards me as I was thanking a customer before they left the diner.

"How can I help you, boss?" I asked, Steven the manager. Steven wasn't even really the "boss" his mother was. She was the one who owned the diner, he just worked for her. But since Steven was still ahead of me, I called him boss. Steven was only 22 and still in college, but his mom let him work as a manger in her diner, so he could make money while in college. Steven was also very handsome; he was 6 feet 3 with short dark hair, and he wore glasses that hid his bright blue eyes. If I wasn't with my current boyfriend, Winston, I would definitely get at that. Well, of course after I turned 18.

"I need you to stay later than usual. I have a big exam I need to study for tonight and Monica can't come in and close. So, I need you to put on your big girl pants and close." Steven asked—well more like begged.

"But I have a family meeting tonight." I groaned even though I actually didn't mind. I would do anything to avoid having my parents together under one roof.

"Come on Kaylie, please." Steven pouted. "I'll ask my mom to give you a 20-dollar bonus."

"Make it 75 and we have a deal."

"50." Steven reasoned, and I stuck out my hand.

"Deal." I said and shook his hand.

It wouldn't be too bad. I had only 3 more hours left to work, then close. Plus, customers here aren't really terrible. Our customers usually consist of older couples or families, not teenagers looking to just be loud and obnoxious.

"You're the best, Kaylie." Steven smiled and gave me a quick hug.

"Oh, I know." I shrugged with a smile and flipped my hair over my shoulder. Steven laughed, before he went off to finish his shift before needing to leave.

The next 3 hours went by fast, and even though I wasn't completely by myself because of Roger our cook was in the back, it felt empty not having someone waiting tables with me. However, I got through it and finished my shift.

Now I was closing up the diner by stacking the stools on the counter after cleaning them. Next was just cleaning the floors since Roger cleans the kitchen himself, because according to him, "no one else does it right."

When I told my mom, I wouldn't be able to make it, she was pretty upset but knew there was nothing I could do about it. I explained to her that she and my father couldn't keep relying on me to be their mediator. They were grown adults that needed to act like some and just talk. But of course, both of them were stubborn.

As I went in the back to grab the mop and bucket, when I came back out I saw someone sitting in the booth across the diner. I knew I locked the front door after Roger had left, and as I was about to scream and through the mop at the stranger, I heard the familiar laugh and yet I still screamed.

"WINSTON YOU ARE A FREAKING IDIOT!" I screeched.

Winston, my boyfriend, continued to laugh as he got up from his seat and walked over to me before giving me a kiss on the forehead. "Aw baby, I didn't mean to scare you."

"That's exactly what you meant to do, you ass hat." I said rolling my eyes and pushed him off of me. "I locked the door; how did you get in?"

Winston said nothing, instead, pulled out his pocket knife. "Your boss needs better locks."

"Or, you need to stop being a criminal." I proposed, and Winston brushed it off with a nah.

Winston has been my boyfriend for about five months now. Although I wouldn't say I love him, I really like him. Like a lot. Even though Winston is known for getting into trouble here and there, he doesn't like to admit it, but he's a good person with a good heart. My mom didn't like him at first, but after about 3 weeks, she warmed up to him. My father still doesn't like him, but I don't care. He's not around enough anymore to get a say in my personal decisions.
