I fiddled with my finger, glancing at the door.
To knock or not to knock.
It was an apartment, nicer than the last one. I could tell even as I trudged up the stairs. I was glad to know she was doing better. That I hadn't ruined her life.
With another deep breath, I worked up all my nerve and tapped on the door.
After I brought my hand back down, I thought about how bad of an idea this was. What was I going to say? Oh, I checked your old place, but you weren't there. So naturally I hunted down the landlord, got your new address and here I am.
What if she didn't even open the door? What if she had some boyfriend already, bigger than me and ready to beat me up?
I was about to turn, run out of here, when the door creaked open. "Hello?" a voice asked. A familiar, sing-song voice. I knew it even after two years. And it was saying my name. "Tomi?"
Lina. "Hi," was all I could say. All I could possibly think to say.
"Wow. This is..."
"Weird?" I asked, turning red.
"A surprise. A nice surprise," she told me, smiling. "How did you get here?"
I couldn't help but smile at her smile. It had been so long. "I took a boat. And then your old landlord told me to come here."
"Well, come on in." Lina opened the door a little more. I walked in and found myself in a large living room. Scattered throughout the room were pictures of smiling girls I didn't recognize. The southern water tribe logo was printed on the throw pillows on top of a white couch.
"This all looks so nice," I commented.
"Thank you!" someone else responded. From a small hallway, a smiling lady with dark brown hair and Lina's blue eyes appeared. "Lina didn't say she was expecting anyone."
"I actually wasn't. Mom, this is Tomi. Tomi, this is my mom," Lina introduced us.
"You can call me Jemma," Lina's mom said. She quickly glanced at Lina, raising an eyebrow. This is Tomi? The boy who almost got you killed in the Southern Water Tribe? The one you haven't talked to in years? He just showed up here?
"Come on," Lina said, taking my hand, "we've got some catching up to do."
Lina took me through the hallway of the apartment and through a doorway. We ended up in a room, a bed on one side, a desk covered in papers and notes on another. Lina's room.
Lina walked over to the desk and arranged some of the books.
"You read?" I asked, not being able to help it. It reminded me how little I knew about some things about Lina, and how much I knew about others.
"Yeah, a little." Although judging by the number of books, it seemed under exaggerated. "So, are you just visiting the city?" she asked, taking a seat on her desk chair. I sat on the edge of her bed. I was reminded of the last time I was in her room, in the water tribe, discussing once again why I was there.
"Sort of. I stopped here on my way to Ba Sing Se," I began. I saw her eyebrows shoot up. "I know it's a lot to ask, but I'm going on another...adventure. And if I didn't cause too much trouble last time, I'd like it if you came along."
For a long minute Lina said nothing. I sat, trying not to stare at her while still trying to find out what she was thinking. Or what I was thinking.
"You know how crazy this sounds, right?" she asked finally.
I nodded. "I've realized."
"You're kind of crazy. Thinking I'd come with you after all this time. Thinking I wasn't scared to death of you after the last time."
"You did let me in your house," I began.
"I have something for you," she said all of a sudden. She rustled though papers on her desk and handed me one of them. Confused, I took it and started reading.
It was a letter from Lina to me that had never been sent. I read it over, seeing remarks about our last time together, about her mom and dad, even about her new friends. Finishing it, I read the last sentence twice, memorizing it.
I've been missing you for a long time.
It was like she put my thoughts on paper in a letter to me.
"Why didn't you ever give me this?" I wondered, still looking at it.
"Why did you wait until today to visit?" she answered.
"Look, I'm not just here because I think you'll help me not get killed..."
"You're here because you can trust me. I get it, coming here was a gamble in itself. Neither of us knew what the other was doing. Both of our lives are different. But I'm glad you came."
I felt myself smile naturally. "You are? That's great. So, does this mean you'll come?"
Her smile faded slightly. "You should know I never agree to any crazy plan without the full story."
"Not even for me?" I asked, knowing it was a long shot anyway. This was going to come out sooner or later.
"Not then and not now."
