With only half my speech of what to say to Mom drafter, we were already at her door. I figured the rest of it would have to be done on the spot.
I tapped on the door of my mom's house. I was suddenly nervous, even more nervous than I had been yesterday. Maybe it was because at least Andi was welcome here. I wasn't sure if I was.
After a moment, I finally just opened the door. Lina said nothing, but followed me in. I took a few steps, and then called, "Adisa?" After I didn't get a reply, I tried, "Mom?"
Suddenly a head popped out of the living room. "Tomi? Is that you?"
I headed into the room with Lina a step behind me. "Yeah, it's me."
She grinned and turned to face us as we apporached. The smile didn't falter when she said, "Andi isn't with you?"
"Uh, no," I said, not sure if I could leave it there or not.
Mom's gaze fell on Lina next. "But you brought someone else, I see."
"Hi," she spoke up politely. "I'm Lina. I just wanted to be here with Tomi." I was surprised to hear that Lina seemed to like me a lot more than she had yesterday.
Mom gave her a short nod that I couldn't read. "We'll talk about you later. For now, Tomi, I'm very glad you followed my note. Although I suspect seeing me is not the only reason you're here."
"I need answers," I said in short. Adisa raised an eyebrow. "I need you to tell me things. In exchange, I can tell you about Dad."
Mom shook her head. "I know all I need to know about your father. It's you that leaves me unclear. Answer my questions about my son, and you'll get information about your mother."
Without meaning to, I looked over at Lina. She looked like she didn't know what to make of it, but gave me a nod. That was good enough. "Alright," I agreed. "Where do we start?"
Mom glanced around the room. "I think it's time for another telling. But this time I'm going to tell you a little more."
"About me?" I asked, confused. "I thought the point was that I was going to do that."
Adisa shook her head, motioning for me to sit. Lina plopped down next to me, leaving some distance between us. "About me. In fact, why don't we come clean now?"
Just when I thought she was going to continue, she closed her eyes instead. I waited, though not exactly patiently. I needed to know everything, and I didn't have much time to waste, so what was Mom waiting for?
"Enide," Mom finally said, eyes still closed. I couldn't help but wonder who she was talking to. It didn't seem like it was to me, not to mention the word was completely foreign. I glanced at Lina, but nothing seemed to register with her either.
After another long moment, I swore I heard something, in one of the farthest corners of the room, yet it echoed through my head. Something like a sigh, or a sound of annoyance. I know it wasn't Lina or my mom, and other that them, we were completely alone.
Out of thin air, my question was answered. A small animal leaped from absolutely nowhere and landed soundlessly at my mother's feet, looking up at her expectantly. I couldn't help but look around, to see if there were more where this...thing came from. There weren't.
Standing in front of Mom, with its back to us, was some sort of ferret like animal. It stood on two feet though, much like a person, and had a shimmering white coat of fur. (check out the picture)
When the animal turned to shoot us a cold glare, I heard Lina nearly gasp. The creature stared at us with eyes so human like it was alarming. It had a beak, too, and looked more similar to a bird in it's face.
"And Tomi was just thinking I was crazy," my mom commented. I hardly heard it, but the bird-ferret turned and looked at her.
"My apologies," a voice said. I wasn't sure if I had imagined it or not, but it certainly wasn't said out loud. Lina looked around like she could hear it, too. Mom still stared at the animal. "I wanted to be sure they could be trusted. Interesting pasts, the two of them."
Now I knew it was a voice. It wasn't talking to me, but about me and Lina.
"Tomi, Lina, this is Enide," Mom said out loud. I wasn't sure if it was possible to be anymore confused at that moment, but now my mother was introducing me to her pet.
"Although your confusion is entertaining, we won't let you suffer through not knowing any longer." The voice again. Now Mom's pet was staring right at me, human eyes to human eyes. Suddenly everything was clicking.
"You're talking to us?" I asked it, though that didn't even begin to cover all the questions I had for it.
The creature nodded. Apparently it could do that. "Yes, I have the ability to speak with humans, both mentally and out loud, though that takes a good deal more effort. You see, I am a spirit. I've only lived in your world about thirty of your years, and it is quite a change."
"A spirit?" Lina asked. Enide faced her and nodded. "So, what are you doing here?"
"Enide and I have an agreement," Adisa spoke up. Clearly she could hear everything. "You see, as a spirit, Enide has more insight about the human world than we do."
"By insight, you mean...?" I already had a guess on the answer.
"She can see individuals' futures," Mom said, like it was so simple. Clearly it wasn't. At all.
There was a moment of silence again as I tried to drag my thoughts together. "So," I start, "you can't actually see the future? Only Enide can? And she just, what, tells you what she sees?" Suddenly this all sounded really twisted. "Why does she do that?"
"She doesn't tell me everything," Mom corrected me. "Only what the person wants to know. And then I rely as little information as possible back to them, in order to keep the mystery of it going. It's really a beautiful system."
"You didn't answer Tomi's question," Lina cut in. "Why doesn't Enide leave, go back to the spirit world?"
Enide shrugged gracefully. "Spirits do not do much for my tastes. I would rather have full knowledge about the world I live in. As for why I'm with Adisa, we made an agreement. I stay with her for her lifetime, assist her in the mundane job of telling fortunes."
"What's in it for you?" Lina pried. I was still a step behind them. A spirit with infinite knowledge about our world, and it stumbled into my mom's hands.
"In order to stay out of the spirit world for extended periods of time, I would either have to halt using my abilities, at least for a while, or find an alternate source of energy."
"Before you think it's anything bad," Mom cut in, "all she needs is a waterbender with the power to spiritbend."
