I sit laughing with Nate, Charlotte, Erin, and the others after hearing a funny joke from Danny. It's Summer now, and nothing bad has happened, which is of course good. The sun is setting and the day could not be more perfect. Erin took us to the Upland again, this time to a more peaceful place. Right by the ocean where the water reflects the sun perfectly.
We sit talking about how wild the year has been and everything before the sun starts setting.
Charlotte whispers something, and before we know it, the water is glowing.
"Charlotte!" I yell.
"What? I wanna have some fun," she says with a smile.
I roll my eyes and work on a sand castle I've been working on. I finish and put a little shell in the center. Okay, as I look at it, I'm not satisfied. I scoop out the rim around it and pour water in it to make a moat. I grab some twigs and make a little drawbridge. I decorate the rim with seashells. I smile with satisfaction and rinse off my hands in the water. Since the moon is a bit high, I just look around with Charlotte and the others before realizing something's moving with the sand.
"What the heck!" I yell, pointing to the spot where it moved.
"Nicole. It's a turtle nest. It's not some sort of sand monster or something." Nate informs me. I calm down and sigh.
A little turtle stops in it's tracks and looks at us.
"Aww... Look how cute it is!" Erin says, crawling towards it.
"Don't scare him," Charlotte says.
"I know, but it's so cute!"
The turtle looks away and walks on towards the ocean. Well, that was adorable.
"This has been so crazy, you know?" I say.
"What has been crazy?" Nate asks.
"Oh, you know, ever since I've met you guys and everything, just, crazy."
"Oh, well, I guess it hasn't been that crazy,"
"Yes it has! The Red Queen and King, Alice, everything."
"Well, yeah, but at least everything is back to normal, now."
"Don't jinx us, Nate." I laugh.
"Well, let's just enjoy the moment as it is, then. And if something bad does happen again, I know we will all fix it," Nate says.
As I stare at the moon, I can't help but knowing what he just said is true.
