Chapter OneI stand, back ramrod straight. Right hand curled in a slight fist over my heart my other behind my back, my feet shoulder length apart, a calm and collected look on my face. A light brown hood over my head, making the upper part of my face indistinguishable.
I watch with a half lidded stare as Keith Shadis, the instructor of the 104th Trainees Squad, psychologically breaks the new recruits as a rite of passage to become effective soldiers. I smirk having a feeling that at least someone will have the guts to stand up to him.
He ignores a few trainees as he probably able to read from their faces, the terror they had undergone. The instructor roughly turns a short blonde boy around with his hand, asking the third line to turn around and watch him as he proceeds.
Keith moves on and stops at a tall blond boy with a face that resembles a horse.... hmm, I shall call him horseface... anyway, horseface wanted to join the Military Police Brigade just to live in wall Sina... hmmph, what a selfish dream, Keith gives the trainee a head butt, making him fall down. "Who gave you permission to kneel, Cadet!?" Keith yells out, "If you cannot stand straight there is no way in hell that you could join the Military Brigade!"
Instructor Shadis leaves the kneeling horseface, who I later found out his name was Jean, and attacks a freckled brunnet who also wanted to join the Military Police, but not for the same reason as Horseface...
"Remember, though you may protect the King with your life- he does not want it," Keith says before he moves on...
I notice a cadet doing the salute backwards, instead of his right arm over his left side of his chest, over his heart like it was supposed to be, his left arm was over the right, what an idiot... I couldn't help but smirk as Keith also notices and goes over to the cadet.
Keith leaves the poor bakwards cadet and continues down the line, he notices a cadet eating a stolen potato, the smirk on my face gets bigger as I notice the sloppily hidden anger in the instuctors eyes. As Shadis attempts to understand why the cadet, who I have dubbed as "Potato Girl" is eating the potato, Potato Girl splits her potato in half and gives him a piece. Shadis states that Sasha's punishment would running and not being able to eat for the rest of the day
Leaving Potato Girl, Shadis walks away, until something else catches his eye, my full blown smirk...
Aw shit....
"What is your name, Cadet!?" Keith yells out, his hazel colored eyes glaring into my two different colored ones, I feel the urge to look away, but I fight against the against the instinct, while I stare back.
"Eli Reed, sir!" I reply back in a strong voice, hoping that there was no hesitation to be detected...
"Where are you from, Eli!?"
"From inside of wall Sina, Sir!" gasps of suprise could be heard from all of the cadets, everyone probabaly wondering why would someone from Sina give up their plush life to live as a soldier...
"From wall Sina!?"
"Yes, sir!"
"Hmmph, why did you decide to become a soldier, cadet?"
"To explore the outside world and see what is outside the walls, sir!" I say, still staring boldly into Keith's hazel eyes.
Keith nods in approval and walks away, I let out a slight sigh of relief as I watch the scary instuctor walk back to the front to talk to the whole group... If the instuctor was so scary that I had almost shit my pants, then how scary could a titan be...?
-
I sit alone in the corner of the room, eating my soup slowly, studying everyone else as they too eat. My hood still covered my head causing a shadow to cast over my face.
