Loving Autumn

The greatest wonder of this world; that is what you always were
From afar I thought I loved you
From up close all I did was kill you
Slowly and painfully
Like the formation of a canyon
I witnessed your erosion
Like an implosion
During those endless nights of your agony
I died ten thousand times
And when the last sliver of life left you
I drowned in the emptiness ten times over
The time I spent at your grave is uncountable
Your return from it was stupefying
There the lesson began
The one that taught me what it meant to truly love
The renewal of your soul was bathed in innocence
Her songs filled the air
She brought rejuvenation wherever she went
The kindness in those eyes of hers seemed to breathe new life into everything
Even to a soul like mine
Before I knew what hit me her innocence was replaced by a thirst for adventure
Taking me on a journey
A search for dreams
Chasing tears, smiles, ideas
It all occurred so quickly in the ephemeral joy of youth
I could barely keep up
The heat bringing me closest to death then I have ever been
Even closer than my sorrow for you brought me
Something that always seemed impossible
And without the essence of your soul
I would not have survived
And then came the day to face you once more
I suspected it might come
That soon I'd see your chatoyant tresses
That perhaps I could admire your silky skin from afar
You, however, did not allow me to stay away
You came searching for me
Your destruction
The one thing I didn't want to be once more
But somehow, after all, we had been through neither of us could stay away
Your touch called me
My breezes whispered to you
This time I truly did love you
Not like before when I thought I knew what love was
This time around I had gotten to know you
Every part of you
I learned what it meant to love fully

Loving Autumn is not about the beautiful girl I gazed at from afar
Loving Autumn is about giving all that you are
And yet expecting nothing in return
Loving Autumn like loving any other is
To take the good and the bad
Every part of who they are
And truly getting to know who they are
Loving Autumn was more than just loving Autumn
It was about loving everything that made Autumn...

Autumn

Author's Note:
Well, that's it for this story. I hope you enjoyed reading this journey as much as I enjoyed writing it. I created this poetry collection in 2014 inspired by a micro story I wrote for my introduction to literature class in university.

If you enjoyed my poems please check out my other poetry book on Wattpad titled The Colorless Period which is a series of poems I have been writing from Fall 2016 to now. Unlike this one, they are not a story about characters instead they are poems that I have written about life and the human experience.

See you around and thank you for taking the time to read and vote. If you like my writing please share it with your friends.

Love, Lily ❤️
