Here it was. The new island. Small grassy plains with a surrounding beach. The grass was long and overgrown, so you couldn't see past it. The now full grown Adam stepped into the grass. Sniffing around, he smelled a berry bush not far in. He padded towards the direction, clearing the grass in his way. Adam came across the berry bush that had been hiding in the tall grass sooner than he had thought. He blinked surprised as a smile spread across his maw. He padded, toward the bush and grabbed a few of the berries off. He ate a few with a satisfied grunt, then grabbed the rest by the stems and walked off to an oak tree not far by. He set them down in a nook between some exposed roots.
"There..." He barked to himself. "It's almost made to be..." He gave a half-hearted chuckle, but the happiness soon faded. He looked off in the direction he once came from. The young stud sighed. He wondered if he could find his way back home, it saddened him quite a bit. But, he had to keep his hopes high. Adam settled himself down under the oak tree and set his head on his paws, maybe a mid-day nap would calm his senses. He closed his dark eyes and calms his breathing, soon enough to doze off.
Dusk had fallen, and the twilight sky had fallen a deep indigo purple color. Adam had slept rather peacefully until this point. His back moved up and down softly until his ear twitched when some grass moved near him. He blinked himself awake, his eyes narrowed. He slowly lifted his head and looked around. Something didn't feel right, he felt as if he was being... Watched? Some grass moved again, just a few feet in front of him. He leaped up and stared at the patch of tall grass. His lip curled back into a snarl, his poison fangs baring.
"Alright! Come on out! Whatever you are..." he hissed out. His pupils dilated as he watched a pure red object streak through the grass, before popping out of the tall overgrown grass. She had bright blue eyes and a large digging claw. She had no claws that could be used for fighting, let alone any weaponry of any kind on her body. It was a miracle she had lived alone like she did. Adam blinked his dull eyes as his expression changed and he closed his fanged jaws.
"Who are you? And why did you sneak up on me like that?" He questioned the other Niche. The red niche narrowed her eyes at him.
"I could ask you a similar question..." she said in a very untrusting way. she said, her haunches rising a bit as her fur seemed to bristle. Adam set his jaw and let his guard down just a small bit.
"I'm... just looking for my way home... " he explained. He saw a bit of a change on the other Niche's face. she seemed to look a little less threatened and a little more, well, understanding.
"You... lost your family?" she asked curiously. Adam nodded slowly, wondering if she had suffered the same fate. The red female looked at the ground, her blue eyes almost searching for something. She then looked back up at him. " I'm Eve... I'm sorry I scared you... I thought you were some brute rogue male trying to take my island from me.." She explained as she sat down.
"I'm Adam... and I'm no rogue. I'm from a kingdom. A prince to be exact." he said boastingly, but he lost the confidence by a couple notches. "Or, at least I was until the Jayhawk took off with me..." Eve nodded, showing that she was listening to his sorrow with care. She seemed to be much more relaxed now. Her fur flat against her and her ears perked up. "But... what happened to you? Why are you all alone?" he asked. He really hoped he wasn't pushing his boundaries by asking. Eve sighed softly and closed her eyes.
"I was part of a very nomadic tribe. We never really stayed on one island or land at all for a very a long time. We collected resources, chopped down the berry bushes, dug up all the roots," She lifted up her large digging paw. "-and destroyed all bunny burrows before moving on." She explained. "I never really fit in. I always liked seeing new lands but... destroying resources? Moving constantly and never having a for sure home? It was too complicated for me! I wanted to settle down and.. have a family someday!" She paused. "So I went off on my own. I started off okay on a swampy island but... I was chased by bugs, bearyenas, and rogue males. so much to the point, I had to move to a smaller.. easier maintained island. Like this island." she said, looking around. The starlight reflecting off of her blue eyes like a pup in search of answers. "since then... I've been managing myself..." Adam had a very sympathetic look, he wondered if she regretted leaving.
"It.. must have been hard," he said, his ears falling back. "I'm sorry you had to deal with that." He crept forward and touched his paw to hers. She flinched but calmed herself down. She looked at him before smiling. "Y'know... you're pretty nice. For a royal," she said as she stood up. "You're welcome to stay for a while. But, you'll have to get on your way after a while. I'd like to keep to myself. " she said as she went back towards her nest for the night. Adam blinked slowly as she left. he gave a huff and set his head down on his paws. Maybe he should eat the berries he collected tomorrow, and head off. He still did need to find his family. AS he thought about the journey, he began to feel drowsy, and he soon began to drift off to sleep.
