"Rose!" My mom calls me upstairs. I take the steps two at a time. "Have you seen my white flannel t-shirt? I can't find it anywhere and I really wanna wear it to the wedding."
My aunt Petunia is getting married this weekend and my parents won't be home until Monday. My parents talked to my best friend's parents and they decided to send us to a summer camp starting tomorrow at three.
I walk off to try and find my mom's shirt but am cut off at the end of the hallway by my brother Toby. This is the first time I've seen him out of his room since summer started last week. He's 17 but he doesn't act like it.
"I'm coming with you and Taylor tomorrow to the camp. I've already got my bag packed."
I'm shocked. This was supposed to be a girls weekend, not a 'bring your older brother to summer camp' weekend.
"MOM!" I scream. I grab her shirt off the banister of the stairs and storm back into her bedroom.
"Why is Toby coming with us! It was just supposed to be me and Taylor on the car drive and at the camp! This is ridiculous!" I yell. I throw the shirt on the bed and give my best attitude stance. Being 16 really has it's perks.
"Rose stop. I can't leave him home alone for two and a half days. Besides, he needs to get out of the house and do something for a change. You see how often he's in his room! I'm worried about him, Rose!" She says all of this as she paces her room, from the closet and back to her suitcase.
"Mom, I understand where you're coming from, but I don't want him going! What if I meet a guy while I'm there? I don't want him ruining that for me! Taylor and her boyfriend have been together for a year and two weeks! I haven't had a real boyfriend since before they got together! The door bell rings, but I don't move. If it's Taylor, she'll let herself in.
"Honey, I understand your dilemma, but what I say goes," she puts her hands on my shoulders, kisses my forehead, and says, "Go have fun with Taylor, sweetie. I love you and I'll be down there shortly." She spins me around and pushes me toward the door.
I look over the banister and into the living room. Taylor is already setting up where we're gonna sleep. I smile and book it down the stairs.
"Taylor!"
"Rose!"
We run to each other and hug as if we haven't seen each other in years even know we saw each other an hour ago. She grabs my hand and takes into the living room.
"Okay, so, I've made our bed entirely out of blankets and pillows." She points to the square, king size bed made out of blankets and pillows, as she clearly stated before. She starts to walk over to a pile of what appears to be movies and she picks them up and hands them to me. "I picked up all of our favorites," she tells me.
I take the movies and flip through them, one by one. "Scream, Scream two, Scream three, Scream four, all of the Twilight movies," I pause as I come across a movie that I hate with a passion. I flip the movie around to show her and I look up, "Taylor? Spaceballs? Really? You know I hate this movie!" She turns to look at me and the movie case and the look of shock is surprising.
She practically runs over to me and snatches it out of my hand. "You know I love this movie, Rose, but I would never bring it over to your house again, after what happened last time."
I remember that day very well. This was two years ago. I was 14. My grandma was over for two weeks because it was right around Easter.Taylor and her boyfriend came over that day with Spaceballs. It used to be my favorite movie.Toby, my grandma, me and my parents were sitting on a couch, and Taylor and her boyfriend were cuddling. Everyone is laughing really hard. For a few minutes everyone is silent, until my grandma sits forward grabbing her arm.
"Grandma? Are you okay?" I ask.
She nods and simply states, "I'm gonna go get a glass of water." None of us thought anything of it, so we went back to watching our movie and laughing hard-core again. None of us realized what was wrong until she walked back in with her water glass and collapsed at the living room entrance.
Everyone but Toby jumped up to help her. We figured out she was having a stroke but we were afraid it might be too late. Right as she lost consciousness, Toby started laughing. I knew he was laughing at the movie, but how could you laugh at all! Our grandma was dying!
I shake my head clean of the memory and a smile at Taylor, ""It's fine. You didn't mean to bring it."
"Okay, thank you for forgiving me, Rose!" She hugs me I smile.
"Wanna watch Scream? We could watch them all tonight if you want. You know they are my favorites." She giggles and I know it's a yes. I pop in the first movie and tell her to go make popcorn.
"Rose? Taylor? We are leaving!" My mum and stepdad are walking down the stairs, two suitcases per person.
"Jesus mom! Did you pack enough for two days?"
"If we forgot anything we can always come back, right dear?" My stepdad says to her. I giggle and hug them both goodbye as Taylor runs in from the kitchen.
"Have a safe trip Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery!" She exclaims. It feels like she's rushing them out of the house, but I'm not about to fight it.
"Bye mom! Bye Rory! Have a safe trip!" I yell. The door clicks behind them and I watch them through the window to make sure they are gone before I run up the stairs to Tobys room. Taylor's never liked him so I know I have to lie to her about why I'm going upstairs.
They've finally pulled out of the driveway and are safely down the street. Time to start my lie!
"Hey Taylor? I'm gonna head upstairs real quick. I need to grab my favorite blanket!" I call into the kitchen.
"Okay! Just don't start talking to your creep of a brother. He's always trying to fill your head with stupid sh-"
"Taylor stop! He's my brother! Don't talk about him like that!" I roll my eyes and walk up the stairs slowly, afraid of what I might find.
I open his door and he's sitting up in bed, his back to me. He is staring at the ceiling and he's frozen. Terrified even.
I start to walk in and around the bed but the first step makes a creek in the floorboards. He whips himself around and stares at me, wide-eyed.
"Toby?"
He starts freaking out and falls off of his bed and backs himself into a corner.
I'm genuinely scared now.
"Toby what's goi-" I start. I'm interrupted by a sudden crunch under my feet as I take another step. I look down, lift up my foot, and peel a bag of something off of my boots. I open the bag and am immediately engulfed in the worst stench ever. I noticed the pill shape of the ones that didn't get crushed under my weight. I can put two and two together.
"What the hell is this Toby?" He keeps shaking his head and covering his face with his hands. When he doesn't respond I tear his room apart to find all kinds of drugs hidden in every nook and cranny of the house. I grab them all except his marijuana, it's medically prescribed. When I walk out of the room, I run to the bathroom and flush it all down the toilet. I look down at my shirt to find white powder ground into it. I slip it off and run to my room to put on my favorite shirt and grab a random blanket.
