trudging along the sidewalk outside of school, jimin's mind were devoid of thoughts. now that he had gotten the answer he needed so badly, instead of the spiral of thoughts jimin had had since last week, there was nothing he could think. jimin didn't know what to make of the situation, how to comfort tae. hell, he didn't even know where tae was! jimin was so numb
his hands were in his pocket, twiddling with an empty candy wrapper that the 17-year-old had neglected to throw out. after the eventful lunch period, jimin had not been able to comprehend a single word that mrs. yang had uttered in korean literature class, and that only lead to an abundance of curious looks from his classmates when he couldn't properly answer a question on the topic at hand.
staring down at his own feet as he walked and walked and walked, jimin noticed a familiar pair of shoes in front of him. dirty and mud-covered black vans with frayed laces and soles that were yellowed from their original color of white. the pair of feet walking in those shoes could belong to no other but kim taehyung.
the brown-haired boy was walking fast home, not noticing jimin behind him, eyes red and cheeks stained with tears. he was in his own world, hugging an impressive stack of textbooks and folders. more homework for the studious boy to devour once he got home - to distract him from the growing distance between him and his family, no doubt. jimin had always known tae to be like that, smart yet he didn't show it. his obsession to escape from the real world through scientific formulas and mathematical theorems seem to had grown by many times as the last week passed without jimin knowing.
immediately, after spotting taehyung, jimin's heart did a double loop. almost instinctively and without a thought, his own two feet were sprinting over to tae. the distance between them lessened with each panicked and tired breath that jimin inhaled. when jimin finally got to taehyung, the silver-haired boy grabbed onto the other's shoulder and gripped it hard. there was a 99% chance tae wouldn't even speak to jimin, but as the positive person he was, it didn't hurt to take hold of that 1%.
surprised and dazed, taehyung turned around. he expected it to be jimin, of course he did. he already knew it when he felt the slightest touch on his shoulder. jimin was so desperate, it saddened tae, making him question why the boy would spend so much time trying to force words out of him, holding his hand, running after him and all that shit. it was clear taehyung didn't want to talk, he was such a disappointment of a friend, of a potential boyfriend (he was shit at that anyway), how could jimin not give up even after all those times tae pushed him away?
would it faze taehyung if he knew jimin had been pushed away by tae in the past days more than he had by anyone in his entire lifetime? probably, not. tae knew what he was doing to the people around him. he was a reckless windstorm, a product of all the times his monster of a father had beat him. and he thought he was helping jimin by letting him keep his ignorance at first, but tae wasn't stupid, and he came to the point where he knew, very well, yet he didn't care anymore.
'selfish, selfish, selfish.'
the words echoed around in taehyung's head. but who could blame him with all that he's been through? what did it mean if jimin was still there, at that moment, with the boy's hand on tae's shoulder?
"jimin." tae's voice cracked. he turned around to face the soft kind face of the pretty boy taehyung had fallen for.
at that moment, it all came crashing down; taehyung into jimin's arms, jimin into his. they were a beautiful disaster - both broken fragments of young and lost teenage bodies. but they were there to catch the pieces of each other, gentle and fragile yet clinging on to all parts, so that one day, the pieces could be rebuilt.
"don't cut yourself with my broken pieces, jimin."
taehyung had to remind jimin, because if he didn't, he couldn't help himself from falling apart. the breaking could not be undone, and all that was left to do was to make sure no one got hurt in its consequences. tae put his face into the crook of jimin's delicate neck. and he sobbed his heart out. he let it all out, hoping that the tears would carry away his hurt and anger.
jimin could feel the wetness of the tears staining his shirt. he could feel tae's fingers gripping at the hem of his uniform. tae's soft brown hair brushing against his chin. tae's warm skin pressing against his. he could feel it all. "it's okay. i'll protect you."
taehyung gave a tiny nod, so small that jimin could only feel tae's head moving against his shoulder, yet not see any change in tae's position pressed against jimin's chest. jimin was short and tae was tall, but they were comfortable nonetheless.
"i won't have time for you though." taehyung let out a quiet sniffle, "because i'm a horrible friend."
"that's okay." jimin smiled a little at the ridiculousness of the situation. they were standing outside of their school, where most probably a ton of students were passing by and constructing theories of what was going on inside the deep well of their hormonal teenage minds.
as if taehyung could feel jimin smile, he let out a small giggle. tae didn't know what he was laughing at, but it was as if the demons had left his body. it was funny because jimin was so innocent and kind. jimin who didn't give a shit if tae was selfish or if he was a bad friend. and that made tae giggle, because there were so many bad things in the world. and taehyung's demons were only one of the horrible things that made up the earth. it was big, but small too when he thought about the fact that so many kids dealt with the same crap as him.
it was funny because he had friends who cared and friends who didn't. and it was even funnier that tae loved them all. yoongi- who was immune to it, having been there since the first time taehyung got beat up. jungkook- who was loathful and sensitive to anyone who touched his (kind of) best friend. and jimin- someone who was a complete stranger to him a bit more than 3 weeks ago yet was here for him to sob with when he needed it the most.
it was fucking hilarious that it hurt so much. that it made tae angry and upset, yet he could forget it whenever he wanted. of course it wasn't healthy, but if he wanted to, taehyung could've pushed it way back to the corner of his mind and act like nothing had happened. sure, it would be lying to himself, but yes, it was also fucking hilarious that this was the way the world and memories worked.
after what felt, like hours. they let go of each other. tae didn't feel any less upset, but this sadness had been layered up with another emotion of some unknown amusement at himself. and this strange feeling distracted him from the pain, which made a bit more bearable. as taehyung glanced around to see if anyone had noticed, he gave jimin a sad smile.
"thanks a lot for that."
and before jimin could even open his mouth, the brown-haired boy was already gone, sprinting away back home, enveloped in a mixture of the emotions he always had when he was with jimin.
tae was gone again, but at least this time, jimin was reassured that it wasn't forever.
