Chapter 7.
I felt the colour flush from my face as he pressed the gas and the car began to swiftly leave the parking lot.
"I uh, I think I'll just call my pare-." I muttered, reaching down for my purse. In a swift movement, he grabbed the purse with one hand, the other still on the wheel, and threw it in the backseat. I gasped as it landed with a dull thud. My heart was racing.
Claire, you've got to take control of this situation...or you're going to end up raped..or killed. My eyes darted around the car, searching for a way to get out. I glanced at the locks. They were still out of reach. The windows..closed. Beads of sweat began to form on my forehead and upper lip.
"I work at Gondola's over the summer." His voice pierced the silence like a machete, and I jumped sideways. He glanced at me, an eyebrow raised. I was frozen.
"Just thought you were wondering." He continued, his voice a bit lower. I nodded once. Tears were beginning to form in my eyes, just because I was too afraid to blink.
"Can you..uh..um..un..unlock the doors...?" I muttered, my tongue tripping over itself if a rampant adrenaline rush. I heard a long sigh come from his lips. The shaking of his head.
"I'm sorry, Claire. I can't do that." He said, gripping the wheel of the car tighter, his eyes staring straight ahead and his eyebrows furrowing. I tensed.
"Please.." I begged quietly.
"No."
I felt andrenaline rush through my bloodstream, causing my heartrate to double..triple. My fingertips were tingling, and my body was beginning to grow uncomfortably hot. Instincts were kicking in. I had to get out of this car. The realization had long since set in. This wouldn't end well. I had to change this.....
Primalistic instincts kicked in as my hand jerked down to my seat belt, swiftly unbucking it. Before I could see his reaction, I began pounding on the glass window with my fist.
"CLAIRE! STOP THAT RIGHT-"
As my ears filled with the sound of my own heartbeat, his rising voice faded. I heard a sickening crunch in my hand, but felt no pain- no doubt the adrenaline coursing through my body. I felt the swerving of the car, and faintly heard the brakes skidding on the road, then the car screeching and jerking to a half. I felt the ring on my finger meet glass, and I began pounding even harder. I was using both hands now. Suddenly, strong arms wrapped themselves around my waist, and pulled me backwards over to the drivers side. The breath was knocked out of me as my head was firmly pressed against the driverside window by a rough hand.
"I told you to stop." A harsh voice whispered loudly into my ear. My eyelids cracked open to see Mr. Davidson glaring at me with a darkened stare. My mouth let out a loud cry as I struggled to fight back, lifting my arms to punch him in the face. In my struggle, I felt my elbow hit the "unlock" button on the side of the car. The locks clicked. His other free hand, the one that didn't have me pinned to the window, grabbed both of my wrists, restraining me. Suddenly, my body went limp and a loud scream errupted from my throat. My hand...Oh my GOD it was on FIRE, it hurt, the Sharp pain was searing through my fingertips and up my arm. My mouth kept the scream coming until all breath had left my lungs... I went limp, tears streaming down my cheeks.
"Please.. MY HAND OH MY GOD" I screamed, thrashing about wildly. His hands became more dominating, my scream errupted even louder.
"STOP SCREAMING AND I'LL LET GO" He roared, his voice shaking me and making me want to cower. I shook violently, and forced my jaws to meet, closing my voice. I trembled, still restrained against the glass, as I looked through tear-filled eyes down at my right hand, still captured by his. It was disfigured, the knuckles bent and swelling. It was obviously broken..... He slowly released me, and I snatched my hand away, cradling it with my other. I realized I was sitting on top of him, and I jerked backwards into the passenger side seat. I was trembling all over. I felt goosebumps prickle up on my scalp, and my heartbeat was echoing in my ears... I was breathing heavily..
"Claire.." He said quietly, looking at my hand. I flinched at his voice. My eyes were locked on him, like a wounded animal looking out of a cage at it's captor. He let out a deep exhale, running his hand through his thick hair.
"I've got a lot to explain." He said lowly. He glanced at me, and we made eyecontact. His emerald eyes were shadowed. I flinched, but couldn't look away. A searing pain in my hand broke the gaze. I let out a loud whimper, and looked down at my hand. It was swelling greatly. My chest was heaving as I struggled to catch my breath.
He was feeling bad about what he was going to do, I thought. He was going to rape me. Then kill me. My thoughts were overclouded with the pain before I could continue foretelling my own murder.
He put his head in his hands, rubbing his face.
I glanced sideways.
The locks......... THE DOORS WERE UNLOCKED.
My head swung back to look at him. His head was still in his hands, his body still turned to me. I cradled my right hand closer to me. I silently took in a deep breath.
Claire...this is your one chance. You can't afford to be clumsy....
I lifted my left hand, and slowly reached behind me until I felt the icy cold of the door handle. Before he had time to notice my silence, I pushed the handle, opening the door. I spun around, dashing out of the car with lightning speed, like an animal just being released from a cage. I stumbled, scraping my knees on the concrete, but I quickly jumped up almost as fast as I had fell. I took off sprinting, running, dashing blindly.
The darkness swallowed me, and I felt my shoes leave the concrete of the road and crash into thickening grass. My hand was searing with fire, my lungs were burning for air, my legs were trembling, my head was swimming. Suddenly, my waist met with tall grass, and small twigs. I glanced behind me, seeing no one. As I turned, I realized I was in pitch darkness.
I slowed after what seemed like hours, my legs giving out finally, crashing to the ground. I rolled over onto my back, engulfed by the tall weeds and crunching leaves. I was heaving, gasping for air. I opened my eyes to see a full moon emerging from behind dense clouds. With a sick realization, I looked around.
Tall trees, their dark silhouettes outlined in the newly given moonlight, surrounded me, almost completely blocking out the sky. They continued on as far as I could see from my position.
I felt bile build up in my throat and I turned on my side to throw up, and I slowly processed what I was facing.
I was in the forest. It was the middle of the night. My hand is broken. I'm alone. I'm scared.
And he is still out there.
