Chapter 11
That familiar glowing screen seemed like a light at the end of a dusty, dark tunnel. My eyes darted to him, to see if he had noticed it as well.
His eyes were still on the road.
Claire....this is your chance.
I unbuckled my seat belt as quietly as I could. It still clicked rather loudly-
"What are you doing?" His deep voice made my heart race and leap into my throat and he glanced back at me. Sweat was beginning to form on my forehead.
"My hand... It hurts to be buckled." I said as clearly as I could manage. He sighed, but turned his attention back to the road. I silently sighed in releif.
I glanced sideways at the phone, whose screen had faded. I began to inch closer, scooting over more and more in my seat. I laid my hand on the seat, and began to slowly reach over to grab the phone. I kept my eyes on the back of his head while my fingers searched blindly for my phone.
Finally. My fingers met with the phone. I slowly moved it back over to me, slipping it between my legs. I turned the screen on, and immediately lowered the brightness setting to the lowest possible notch.
"You're awfully quiet." His voice pierced the dark car like a fucking lightsaber. I nearly jumped out of my skin.
"Um..." I muttered.. He glanced back at me.
"Yes?"
"I have to use the restroom..." I said, feeling my cheeks redden through my lie.
"We'll stop by the gas station. I need to fill up anyway. " He replied. He fell silent.
I nodded. I tried to picture a map of my town in my mind. The only gas sation on this side of town was the Speedway on Pineview Drive.
I let the silence lay on the air for a few moments to make sure he wouldn't turn around again, then jerked my head back down to my phone.
I opened the messages. I didn't bother to look at my new ones, but I instead went to COMPOSE MESSAGE. With a shaky hand, I typed in Allie's number, and began writing my S.O.S.
"KIDNAPPED ME PLZ HELP ME GASSATION BY PINEVIEW DRV SILVER BMW"
I clicked the send button, and hid the phone between my legs again.
After what seemed like forever, I felt the phone begin to vibrate. However, it was beginning to make a loud buzzing noise, so I quickly began to cough to cover up the sound. He glanced back at me with a raised eyebrow, then turned back around.
I opened the message from Allie, still hiding the phone between my legs.
"I'm coming hang in ther"
I slid the phone underneath my thigh and rested my head on the backseat. My heart was still thumping from the adrenaline. Allie knew. She would come find me, call the cops... I'd be free. I started counting my heartbeats they were so loud.
The glow of the approaching streetlights in town made my heart race even faster.
C'mon....c'mon...almost there.....
My face began to tingle as the gas station came into view. My eyes craned out the window, searching for Allie's car......
THERE. It was a white Impala parked to the side of the station. The windows were tinted almost black, so much so that the only way I could recognize it was her car was the slight dent in the front bumper. I slid the phone behind me, and into my back pocket.
He parked the car next to the fuel pump, unbuckled himself, and turned around to face me.
"Let's go to the restroom. I'll escort you." He smirked with a wink. The blood rushed from my face.
