“Hey. It’s me.” I say when Mel finally picks up.
“I knew you’d change your mind!” Her voice sounds excited, high pitched.
“What’s the plan?” I ask.
“Meet at my house in one hour. I’ll text you the address.” She hangs up. Okay then.
An hour and five minutes later I am sitting on Mel’s bed in her room. Mel is pacing the room in front of me and Sarah is sitting next to me, looking down at her hands again. “Do we have a strategy? A plan? Anything?” I ask when I realize that no one is talking.
“Hey, it was my idea to come together. I can’t do all the work.” Mel says, pausing her pacing for a second. I’m annoyed. I thought she’d at least have a plan before calling us over here.
“Are you being serious!?” I exclaim.
“Hey hey, maybe we should make a plan instead of arguing.” Sarah interrupts before I can continue. She’s right. When she sees that Mel and I are listening she continues. “What’s the aim? What do we want to happen to Will?”
“We want him to be humiliated like he humiliated us. To expose him for what he truly is, make people stop loving him.” Mel’s voice is full of anger. Wow. She might even hate Will more than I do, but probably not.
“We should start off by taking things away from him, make him vulnerable.” I say.
“Yes. That’s a good start. We should take away his football, good grades, girlfriend… They’re all what’s important to him and what makes him so loved and amazing.” Sarah is staring dreamily at a wall. It makes me think she might have feelings for him, but that would be stupid. I mean, why would she be helping us with revenge if she didn’t hate him?
“Stage one: Take away his everything.” Mel says as she writes this on a black board. Underneath it she lists football, good grades and girlfriend and puts check boxes next to them. Wow. This is looking serious. I smile. “So, let’s start with football. Any ideas?” Mel says as she finishes writing. We all sit in silence for a while, thinking, before I finally get an idea.
“Does Will still play with his lucky sock? He used to always insist on wearing it back in the junior league in the eighth grade. He even cried that one time he couldn't wear it.”
Mel scoffs. “I’m pretty sure Will doesn’t have a lucky sock.”
“He does actually.” Sarah says. “I’ve seen him put it on before football practice. It’s always the same one. He keeps it in his gym bag and changes it just before he plays.”
“You spy on him before his football practice?” Mel asks Sarah, surprised. Sarah turns a deep shade of red.
“Um, yeah. I’ve been uh planning revenge for a while now.” I narrow my eyes at her suspiciously but decide to let it go.
"It's perfect." I say. "We steal his sock and hopefully it will result in him sucking at football for a while and losing captain. It's worth a shot."
“Great. We’ll steal his sock then.” Mel grins and her excited voice is back. “Meet outside your house 9pm tonight?” she asks me. “You live next door to him, right?” I nod. “Great. His gym bag will probably be in his car. This will be a piece of cake.”
At exactly 9pm I run out the front door.
“Are you freaking kidding me?” Mel asks when she catches sight of me. “What are you wearing?” I’m wearing a black beanie, black t-shirt, black leggings and black combat boots.
