I'm sure everyone knows about the police on campus at the Stoneman Douglas High School and how he did nothing to help the students, it got me thinking about our police and what they would do in the event of an emergency. I'm not trying to be mean to them or get them fired but, the other day I saw a woman who parked along the street where most people pull up and drop off and there's the little island in the middle and she was walking to the campus on one side of the island and the police was on the other side she was walking slow and was able to walk all the way to the school and in front of him and he didn't do anything, she didn't look familiar and after 3 years of being here most people I see on campus I recognize, he might have been focusing on something else and it probably doesn't happen a lot so it doesn't really affect anything. This didn't really scare me but because there's at least 5 school shootings a week and it wouldn't be that rare for it to happen to us I would hope that in the future they would notice it. The fact is, that when a shooter comes on campus the first few classes aren't going to know to barricade and most of the kids from stoneman douglas said they didn't know what was going on until they saw people dying and heard the shots so maybe our way of the active shooter drill isn't so effective unless someone could go on the PA system and say there was a shooter. Also, pulling the fire alarm could be the worst thing to do because it's basically telling people "hey get out of your classes which are one of the safest place to be during this event" and if the shooter just turned the corner to a section full of the classes most people would get shot. Based on my opinion the bathroom would actually be one of the safest places to be, the shooter is going to focus more on the classes then the one person in the bathroom and, at least here, the bathroom doors lock from the inside so they won't even bother shooting the lock to get to you (trust me I thought about this a lot) and you've never heard of someone getting shot by a shooter on campus it all happens in the halls or the class room,So in the event that you're outside when the shooting starts or you went outside because someone pulled the fire alarm don't run to a class because most of them won't let you in because of the rules run to the bathroom lock the door and go into a stall and stand on a toilet so in the event they do come in they won't see you immediately and hopefully move onto the next class or get detained.. The only way you could fully be safe from a shooting is CHANGING GUN CONTROL LAWS hint hint keep fighting. When asking some people they said they feel safe in how we deal with active shooters but they really shouldn't unless the shooter was in the class behind yours and you realized early enough that there was a shooter and locked everything, unless he wasn't lazy and realized he could probably get through the door barricade easily, the hardest part would be getting through the bands Ms.McCurley kindly made us. Your probably don't even think about this but a shooter is going to be able to shoot through tables, maybe not the science ones, but the normal desks we use won't be much protection against a strong gun and a lot of bullets. If we were more protected the death count for school shootings wouldn't be as high as it is. With having a low of 1 death and a high of 17 deaths this year. You would think with all the protection we have it would be like a death low of 0 and a high of 5 but obviously this plan isn't safe enough and the police might not be a lot of help if they don't know where the shooter is. We should all try to find new ways to keep us safe even if laws won't be changed. We could have a separate fire alarm type thing or a button that sends a message to the main office to sound the alarm we have for a shooter. We could also get special tools to "fight off" the shooter like have a bucket full of rocks in the back corner of a classroom, near a door wouldn't be a good idea, but if a student with a good enough throw could hit him in the head it would give students the chance to survive instead of the shooter coming in and them just sitting there praying that he doesn't see them but this could also go wrong if someone really stupid uses the rocks in class so maybe have them by the teachers desk. We should also have an assembly to teach kids about how to protect themselves during the event of a student because when we do the drill all we do it build a barricade. They would teach that you could use textbooks, water bottles, chairs, and other things to protect your life. So if anyone important is reading this and can get this through to the school board or something like that maybe we could make some changes to our drills and the ways we deal with active shooters and make our school a safer place because it is not normal to be scared every time someone knocks on the door or I am alone in the hall. There is a reason why these shooting keep happening and even if we can't get the government to change anything we need to at least make an effort to make school a safer environment.
