Florence Saint
To say I was nervous was an understatement. But I could never show them that. I could let no one see how scared I truly was just to park my car infront of the building. After giving myself a well needed motivational speech whilst sitting in my car I managed to step out of my car and close the door. Not forgetting to lock it up. I rubbed my sweaty palms against my jeans as I saw how intimidating the building was up close. I had never been inside before, my interview was done elsewhere in some office next to the place. It was large, all made of brick, barbed wire and wire fencing ran as far as the eye could see. The few windows had bars across them and not just anyone could pass through the officers entrance. I pressed the button on the side of the door as I was instructed to do and waited for someone to come. Not even a minute later a man who looked to be my own age, came to let me inside. He had dark hair, bright green eyes and was tall. He wore a black suit and was, unlike this whole place, not intimidating at all. But handsome, very handsome. He wore a smile on his face and welcomed me in very politely.
"Lovely to have you joining us here Miss Saint. My name is Mr Andrews, Sam Andrews that is. I must say you're the first woman we've hired here for five years. Most just get scared I think. Let's hope we don't have that same issue from you." He smiled and I saw his teeth were in perfect alignment.
"I must say Mr Andrews you seem very young"I commented nervously, but relaxed as he smiled at me.
"Yes I get that a lot. I'm twenty four. Took over this place from my father. Learning the family business" Sam said looking proud, but I realised from his words that this man was my boss.
"Two years older than me sir. I can't wait to get started" I said trying to make my best impression. He said to follow him, so I did, into a locker room of maybe thirty large lockers. He pointed to locker number one and told me that was mine.
"I'll leave you to change. All you need is in there. Change now, then at the end of the day you collect your stuff and make your way into your allocated apartment on the prison site with the keys you were sent. I'll be waiting outside" Mr Andrews explained and I was glad that I wasn't a night officer.
Inside the locker was a full uniform with a card with my photo and information about myself. I happily put on the uniform and boots, fiddling with all the wires from the walkie-talkie I had strapped to my shoulder. I attached the name card to my belt, tied back my hair and after shoving my things into the locker I left to go to Mr Andrews.
"Let me show you around and you can meet some of our other guards, and potentially some of your inmates that have been assigned to you" Sam said and I could only nod for I feared if I spoke he would see how nervous I was.

The floors, the walls everything was white. Guards stood out with our black uniforms, and inmates in their grey uniforms. I again wiped my hands along my tight black trousers and swallowed harshly as I started to see the cells.
"You'll be working on the maximum security section so this section I'll take you round now is all you need to worry about" Mr Andrews said and I nodded as we past the first few cells.
"Sir? Why are they all empty?" I said nervous that maximum security prisoners were just wandering round.
"These prisoners get an hour outside each day starting at four. Breakfast is at eight. Lunch at one and dinner at seven." I looked down at my watch and saw that it was one o'clock. They were all at lunch.
He started to explain my duties and expectations when I'm a guard are different from when I'm a councillor. Violence, schedules, breaks, the lot. It was a lot to take in but I felt proud to be here. It was my dream to be here and here I was. We got to a large canteen and I saw all the prisoners eating lunch. Sam lead me through the canteen and all went silent. I was being looked at as a piece of meat. All eyes were on me as I walked and I had to reassure myself in my head that I was ok, but the catcalling and whistling started and my heart rate couldn't help but increase.
I looked round and just before we walked out something, someone caught my eye. I met with the most beautiful pair of green eyes imaginable. I shook them off and walked briskly out of the canteen.

Mr Andrews walked me to my office that was right next to a different sort of cell. The hallway apart from my office and the cell was empty. It sent a shiver down my spine knowing it was just me and one prisoner in this part of the prison. "Who's in there? Looks bigger than all the other cells" I inquired and Sam told me that they had off the rail celebrities here and there was a musician who's career had plateaued and he'd gone off the rails, drink driving, drugs and gun possession. I nodded my head but found it unfair that he had a bigger cell when he was still a criminal like everyone else. "He's actually your main inmate that's been assigned to you. You have several others and here are their files" Sam said handing me about ten files, some bigger than the others.
"Get yourself settled in. You can decorate however you want. You'll need this. That has everything you need to know, where things are, expectations, questions you could ask and processed and all that boring shit. Here's the master key for all cells, you'll be expected to keep watch on his cell." He gestured to next door.
" You're break and lunch times will be in that book. Well that's about it I think." Sam said and I became aware of people, prisoners, walking and talking loudly. Obviously lunch was over. Sam walked out but stuck his head back in as a prisoner walked past, "Miss Saint? Don't let them see that fear, they'll eat you alive. Lock his cell. I will check up on you soon" Sam said walking away. I nodded and walked out the room to see the same pair of green eyes leaning on his cell door. He scanned my body and I grabbed the bars of the door. He took a few steps back and I slid the bars across. I locked the door and took in the man. I knew who he was, as did most girls. I walked back towards my office when someone cleared their throat.
"Excuse me? Officer Saint?" A low husky voice rang out and I walked back to his cell.
"What" I said folding my arms. He pointed to the cell door.
"You left the key in the lock" He grinned and I cursed myself for messing up infront of him. I shoved the key in my pocket rolled my eyes and walked away to the sound of his low laugh.
I kept the door to my office open as I sat in the spinning chair. I grabbed the files off the desk and flipped through them to find the one I was looking for.
Next to his mugshot was his information page.
