Walking one from school, Marcy was listening to her favorite artists on her cell phone Nick got her for Christmas. She didn't really understand the holiday but accepted the gift anyways. One earphone was in her ear and the other was dangling by her side. She could hear Brody approaching her. "Hey Marcy!", He greeted. Marcy smiled at him and wrapped up her headphones around her phone. "Where are you headed?", he asked, walking closer to her. "Home, why?",she looked at Brody quizzically. "Well I was going to ask if you wanted to go to a bonfire tonight, but considering it's you....", Marcy interrupted him. "Sure I'll go if you quit jabbering. Where is it?",she asked. They stopped walking and Brody turned around and pointed facing towards the beach,"See the cove over there? You'll see the bonfire tonight, it will be right next to it.",he explained. "Okay I'll be there.",she answered and turned back to head to Nicks house.

Once there she finished her homework and found some more crab Nick left her for dinner. Fortunately Jeanne wasn't home yet and Marcy knew just what to do to torment her. Walking into her office, Marcy went through all of her desk drawers. She smiled and then frowned when she found what she was looking for. Two packs of Camel No.9s and a small zippo lighter were the only contents. Marcy took them and stowed them away in a drawstring bag she would take to the bonfire tonight. She only planned going to shut Brody up, and have a fun night for once, even though humans were very high on her hate list.

Marcy had smoked before, when she was first banished. but that was a couple years ago and she hadn't smoked since then. Besides she thought Jeanne shouldn't be smoking anyways. Marcy was about to leave when Nick got home. "Marcy did you eat yet?", he asked. Marcy heard him shouting from the front door. She greeted him there and noticed Jeanne was home too. "Yeah I already ate, thanks though.",she smiled at him. Nick set his bag from school on the ground and Jeanne went upstairs. They both walked into the kitchen and Marcy cleared away her homework and slipped it in her backpack. "How was your day?", Nick asked her. He wasn't sure what kind of answer he was going to get from her, so he treaded lightly. "It was fine. How was yours?", she asked with another smile. "Not bad, where are you going?", he wondered noticing the bag on Marcy's back.

"I was just going out.",she answered. "Out where?". he pushed again almost sternly. Nick was now cutting vegetables for dinner. Marcy's smile faded and she answered him, "I was going to take a walk down the beach", she lied. "Are you going to the cove?", He asked. "I'll walk right by it and won't look back, cross my gills and hope to fry.", she mocked. Nick had to stifle a laugh. "Alright, but don't go near the cove and be back by 11:00 it'll get dark soon",he commanded. Marcy beamed and hugged him. "Thank you thank you thank you!",she squealed. Nick had never seen her that happy. Marcy ran out the back door and down the beach. She could see a small orange and yellow flame at the end. The sun was setting , it's early orange tone anchoring itself in Marcy's bones and memory forever.

Walking at a brisk pace, she didn't care what the consequences would be if Nick found out she lied. If Jeanne found out she took her cigarets she'd deny it and ask why she had them in the first place. She didn't give a hoot about Jeanne but Marcy did care about what happened to the baby and if Nick would ever tell her their secret. She slowed her walk down to a stroll and cringed at her dry legs that were itching for the water. Even though it was only a few feet away she shook her head. Marcy would not risk it. She kept walking.
