AppearanceIf you want to feel like a mermaid, you will have to look like one. This will help make you, and others, believe you really are a mermaid. You don't necessarily have to follow the tips I will give you though, be unique!
Hair: One of the biggest things you can change about your appearance is your hair. Try and make it look as much like it does in your fantasy shift as possible. Many mermaids are depicted with long hair, so you will need patience if you are to grow it out.
If you want to grow your hair out long, just below your shoulders or longer is best, but make sure you trim your hair every few months. You want your hair to be healthy and shiny! If your hair isn't naturally wavy, and you wish it were, curl it lightly to give it a natural wave. Remember, you don't want dry, unhealthy, brittle hair, so if you use anything with heat, use heat-protecting products, and moisturize your hair often. If you want a more natural wave to your hair without using rollers or a curling iron, try braiding your hair while it's still wet after washing it. Sleep with the braid (or braids) in and take them out in the morning for a wavy beach look. Most mermaids want there hair to be sleek and shiny. If your hair is really greasy, use a drying shampoo, like Selsun Blue, and only condition your ends. If your hair is too dry, use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, like Pantene or Herbal Essences. A few ways you can make your hair shinier is by adding a little bit of vinegar to your hair and rinse it out, rinse your hair with cool water instead of warm, or do a hair mask. You can make a hair mask with eggs, mayonnaise, Aloe Vera, and more! Look at this Wiki page to learn more: http://www.wikihow.com/Have-Soft-Shiny-Hair-Inexpensively. You can also put water and salt in a squirt bottle and spray your hair a few times to get that ocean, beachy look. Also, some mermaids need to change their hair color to match their shift. You can dye your hair, but make sure you get it dyed by someone who knows what they're doing, and keep your hair hydrated! If you want to test hair colors, you can try non-permanent dyes, hair chalks, or use Kool-Aid as a dye. See more here: http://www.wikihow.com/Dye-Hair-With-Kool-Aid . If you have lighter hair, like blond or dirty blond, you can use lighteners. Personally, I use Sun-In, which is an inexpensive spray that lightens your hair in the sun! Finally, get the right hair accessories. Since you're going to be spending so much time under water, put fake starfish, seashells, coral combs, or even a sprinkle of sand in your hair to show that you're a true mermaid.
Face/Body: First, your skin: Try to keep it soft and hydrated. Being in water, especially salt water will be very drying to your skin, so you need to prepare for that. Use Chapstick, or lipgloss often to keep your lips soft and free of cracks. Try and use high quality creams, moisturizers, but if you can't afford a lot of moisturizing products, you can apply lemon juice and yogurt on your body once or twice a week. Surprisingly these two things naturally increase the water holding capacity and endurance of your skin, which is definitely important for a mermaid! Secondly, your makeup: Have fun designing your own mermaid look! You can go on Youtube and look up mermaid makeup tutorials and find tons of stuff! Here are some tips from me though: Use a light foundation or tinted moisturizer to make your skin look clear and blemish-free. Make sure most of you makeup is light and sparkly, but don't go overboard! Wear lipgloss to make your lips shiny, and sometimes, its fun to wear a lightly tinted one, maybe in blue or purple! Remember, most mermaids are pretty natural, so don't cake it on! Try in wear your eyeshadow in oceanic colors that remind you of the sea. You can trey pearly whites, deep greens or ocean blues! Be creative! Wear a bit of mascara and eyeliner, to give your eyes a larger, more inquisitive look. Wear clear nail polish, mood-changing polish or polish the color of your scales. Remember, most mermaids are pretty natural, so don't go overboard! Wear a small bit of mascara or liquid eyeliner to give you the beautiful look of a mermaid. Wear mood changing nail polish. If you want to look like you just got out of the water, you can spray your face with a little bit of water. Remember though, if you go swimming wear waterproof makeup!
