CHAPTER 20

Brett, almost gleefully, shut the door to his study. He shrugged off his coat of fake grief and tossed it aside, dawning instead his light mood. "Hello Carrick." he said happily, tossing the dog a rat he materialized out of the air.  The dog leapt to catch his treat and crunched the rat's squeal into silence in one snap. He took only one bite before he swallowed the meat. Once finished, he settled back into his corner, calmly watching his master.

He did love this part, when he had the most energy. Brett waved away the shimmering wall to his right, revealing a bed encircled in a cage. The wall boasted odd things; various talismans and enchanted objects to help with the project. A girl lay in the cage, asleep on the bed. Around her neck hung a black flower with bright yellow stamen encased in a perfectly clear sugar case. He could feel the flower sucking away her life force and storing it, waiting for him to come and snatch it away. He'd need that force if he were to regain his immortality. Doubt and frustration tugged at his mind as he remembered Eric. The stupid man had caused him such inconvenience. First he'd taken the throne he'd had to work to take back, then he'd taken the immortality he'd had to grow from so many souls. Inconvenient to the end. Then Brett smiled, particularly pleased with the "end."

With a flick of two fingers, Brett unlocked and opened the cage door. He strode inside before kneeling beside the blonde young woman. He tucked a stray hair away from her face and smiled as he sensed her youth fading. He pitied her face which would so quickly fall into agedness. He stroked the skin that would soon be flaccid and loose. Then he smiled. "You're sacrifice is greatly appreciated." he said aloud, with a hint of sarcasm in his voice. "What a pretty little thing. I suppose I could have made you my queen if your brother hadn't shown up." He leaned close to the sleeping girl's face, as if she were awake. "He really does get in the way, doesn't he. And now that he's here to stay, well, I'll have to figure out something to do with him. Maybe he can follow in his sister's footsteps once his love tires of him. Then, once she's grown powerful enough to be useful, she can tread the same path." He stood and clapped once. "You'll all be so very useful!"

Brett waved the door closed before him as he walked away, all too suddenly bored with his conversation with the sleeping Catherine. He sat in the single chair along the table and played with the knife he'd pulled from Eric's corpse. He turned it in his hands, admiring the way the stones in the hilt glinted in the glowing orb's artificial light. Then, with a quirk of his mouth, Brett hurled the knife at a wooden panel on the wall.

He grinned at the way the wood split at the knife's impact.
