Janelle's Point Of View
I wake up with a shock, sweat running profusely down my forehead. Last night, I was haunted by that dream again. The dream where my father looked at me with that menacing smile, his hand up in the air ready to hit me. The words he said in the dream still echoes in my head, 'I found you'. Two years has passed since he was taken away, yet I don't feel safe at all.
"Janelle! Get you sorry ass down here and help me get ready for breakfast!"
I rush to get ready and run downstairs before Sunshine, our most lovely and wonderful 'mother' aka the owner of this orphanage, yells at me again. I murmur an apology at her and quickly prepare food for the twenty five children living in the orphanage. I could never understand how she, a slave driver who makes us do all the chores and everything else for her, managed to get a license to run an orphanage. I have to wake up at five every morning just to help her cook, clean and take care of the kids who are under her responsibility, isn't this unpaid labour? Which is totally illegal. After settling all the other kids down for breakfast, I rush off to the living hell, or school as most call it, for classes. Nobody there likes me. They think that because I don't have parents, I am different from them and that I don't belong. Well, I don't really care. Why bother making friends that will abandon you one day and leave you all alone? I'll rather stay all by myself in isolation, far away where I cannot be hurt.
"Janelle, meet your new parents!"
Those were the first words I heard Sunshine say as I walked through the orphanage doors.
"What?" I cried out in surprise.
In front of me stood a couple who looked like they were in their late thirties. A guy with chocolate-brown hair had his arm around a blonde lady and they were both smiling at me.
"Hello, I am Brian and this Beverly and we are really pleased to meet you! I know this is sudden but we have been thinking about adopting a child and when we looked at your profile, we knew you were the one for us! All the forms have been signed and all we need now is your consent. We really hope you'll agree and come back with us!"
I gaped in awe at them. I'm getting new parents? Throughout these two years, no one has ever wanted to adopt me. They thought that I was a problematic child and would give them a lot of trouble. But now, I had the chance to get away! And just maybe, go to a place where perhaps, my father would never be able to find me.
I struck up my courage and took a deep breath before looking them in the eyes and saying, "Let's go then, I can't wait to get out of this hell-hole."
In a span of less than fifteen minutes, I had packed up all my few pieces of clothing and my little essentials. The three of us then hopped into Brian's BMW where we took a long drive back to my new home in California.
