"I never found a companion that was so companionable as solitude."
-Henry David Thoreau
Janelle's Point Of View
"Honey, time to wake up!"
I opened my eyes as Beverly's voice rang out from downstairs. This was weird, waking up to no noisy children and no angry shouting Sunshine. I lay in bed for a bit, soaking in the atmosphere of my new bedroom before washing up and heading through the large hallways downstairs to the dining room.
Brian and Beverly were very wealthy and owned a huge mansion here in California, it was so huge that I had trouble finding the dining room! Upon my arrival (after ten minutes of searching!) the smell of freshly made waffles and Beverly's smile welcomed me warmly. I took a seat and greeted good morning before digging into my delicious plate of waffles dressed with maple syrup and strawberries.
"Hope they taste good! I'm not the best cook, I'm sorry!" apologised Beverly sheepishly, "Anyway today after school wait for me okay? I'm going to take you out shopping!"
"Sure, but we really don't need to go shopping, you don't need to waste your money on me!" I replied, "And what are you talking about? These are the best waffles I have ever eaten!"
"You're my daughter and you deserve a big treat! We're going shopping, end of discussion. And thank you!"
Daughter, such a strange word to me. I haven't heard that word in a long long time. I fought back tears as I thought of my mother, I missed her so much. Looking in the mirror I always think of her, I'm the exact replica of her. Finally, after what seemed like hours, Brian came down dressed in a suit.
"Let's get going Janelle, I'll send you to school before going to work."
I said my goodbyes to Beverly agreeing to meet her in the school parking lot and walked with Brian to his black Porsche.
We made small talk before reaching my new school 'Fabrevans High'. I got out of the car and nervously walked towards the giant doors of the school. It was my second day here, yet I still felt nervous and worried about how people thought about me. Suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"Hi! You're the new girl, Janelle right?" I turned around to see a short brunette girl smiling at me. "I'm Jessica, nice to meet you! I'm in your first period, history class."
I smiled at her and we made way to my locker to take my books. Jessica seemed really nice and we had lots of classes together, and thankfully one of them was lunch. The day passed by quickly in school, classes flying by me. Finally the lunch bell rang and Jessica invited me to sit with her for lunch. We sat down at a table consisting of three other girls.
They were all brunettes, though two of them had dyed tips. One was average and very skinny, the other was short and skinny and the last was tall and buff.
"Hello! I'm Nicole," the short girl said gesturing to the super skinny girl and tall girl "And this is Jamie and Renee!"
I waved hello and introduced myself before joining the queue to grab some lunch. We all realised that we had a lot in common and we shared many classes together. Was I making friends? I haven't had those for so long. Is this what it feels like? Soon, the bell rang and we went off our classes.
"Ring!" went the last bell and I waved to my new friends before heading to the carpark. Beverly's gray BMW was already there, so I hopped in and greeted her. As we made small talk about my second day of school, I thought to myself.
"This is the start of a new beginning for me. I can just feel it."
