He lay there unable to close his eyes. Ever since the incident, Dan hadn't been able to sleep without dreaming of the blood, Rose's body lying there, still, as if peacefully asleep but he knew. She was dead, and she wasn't coming back.
He sighed as he threw his arm across his eyes. The news had spread fast. An animal attack. Dan also knew the truth to that. He saw the marks that had sliced into Rose and no animal had claws that long or just two of them.
That aside, the news reached the locals within hours. Dan was now teased about how he was the failed hero. They constantly reminded him that he could never do anything right: cook, ride a bike, save his best friend from dying. He tried.
Guess I didn't try hard enough, he thought, screaming through his closed lips.
He rolled over thinking how he would give anything to see her again and no matter how hard he fought it his eyes fluttered closed and he dreamed.
He woke up in a field. The skies were not the normal color, almost grey, they were blue and the grass was emerald green. It looked like a scene from a movie, the sun casting a warm orange glow on the field.
He surveyed his surroundings. Was he alone? What was he doing there, just to be alone?
Suddenly he saw a head of blonde hair. Rosy? Could it really be? She was not alone though. As Dan got closer he saw that she was with a boy who had curly black hair.
Dan wasn't one to get jealous of any of Rosy's admirers but they seemed to be having an intimate moment lying on the grass and he wanted so badly to run to her and hug her close.
"Fuck this," he said to himself before running to her. Screw whatever was going on or who the boy was, he had lost Rose and he would be damned if he didn't get to hold her now. After everything, he felt like he deserved it.
"ROSY!" he exclaimed as he stopped at their feet. However, she didn't look at him as he was expecting, she was still smiling at the boy and pointing at the clouds.
He walked to her side and bent down. "Rose!" He tried again.
Nothing.
He was getting agitated and her giggles weren't helping. "Why won't you say something? Look at me at least!" He reached for her arm and to his surprise fazed right through it as if he were a ghost.
"What the hell?" he fell back on his butt examining his hand like it was on fire. Horrified, he turned back to Rosy and her guest. He hadn't hear it until now but they were talking.
" , you know you can't hide forever." the boy said. His eyes were a peculiar color, but before he thought too much about it, Rose responded.
"I know," She heaved a deep breath, the boy listening intently, "I'm just... scared." she finished. "This is the only place I know, I'm scared to lose it."
The boy smiled. "You won't lose anything. I will protect you, forever. Plus, you might not know it, but you have more than you think."
Dan didn't even realize that after the boy said that, they started fading away. He was too absorbed in his thoughts about what the hell they were talking about. Suddenly there was a bright light in his face and the sun was peaking through his curtains.
He groaned, "What do I do?"
