She stayed in the water for a while, relaxing. Her hair was moist causing loose strands to fall out of place. Reina couldn't help but feel sad. She had really hoped that her mother would be here to greet her this morning. It was the first birthday she could remember, when the two of them wouldn't be having cake for breakfast and dance to the rhythm of "This is the Night". This was their favorite song by The Weird Sisters. It was their private ritual. But ever since they got to this country, this house, this family a lot of things have changed. It was meeting after meeting and errand after errand with them. Her mother kept promising to make more time for them, but Reina could tell that, for some reason, she didn't have much say in it. And so, the summer was coming to an end and soon after that she would be off to her new school and the two wouldn't meet until Christmas.
"When all is dark and there's no light. Lost in the deepest star of night. I see you" Reina mumbled and a sad smile crept up her lips. She begun humming to the tune of the song as she closed her eyes and sunk further into the steaming water. Her thoughts drifted back to this morning. Draco looked so scared and insecure. She couldn't imagine why he would ever feel this way inside his own home. There was something about his family that deeply irritated her. They were unsettling people, with unsettling habits. They seemed so distant, no matter how much they tried to pretend otherwise. Narcissa was the only one who showed the tiniest bit of affection towards Draco every time she got the chance. His father on the other hand seemed lost. If Reina had one word to describe him, it would be paranoid. There was no doubt that Lucius Malfoy was once a handsome and imposing man. However, the man she came to know as Draco's father was a mere shadow of his past self. Having him walking around the halls made the manor seem haunted.
" As if the architecture isn't depressing enough" she whispered as if there was someone there to listen. Draco's warning echoed in her conscious mind and she became uncomfortable. Deciding this was enough soaking and sulking for the day, she tried to get out of the tub. She was about to reach for the towel when she heard it. A faint whisper, like the muffled voice of a woman.
"Reiiiinaaa" the voice called to her, causing shivers to run down her spine.
"Reiiinaaa" it called again and the girl sunk back into the water that was now getting uncomfortably cold. She dared not speak a word. She was even holding her breath for fear that even the slightest noise would expose her to the danger. Her eyes became wide as she begun hearing heavy footsteps approaching the bathroom door. With every thudding sound her heart skipped a beat. Closer and closer. Reina reached for her wand, only to curse silently as she remembered leaving it in her room. The pacing stopped right outside the bathroom door, followed by a gentle knock on the wood.
" Reina?" it was Draco's voice that called. " Are you done in there? We need to get going at some point".
There was no response. Draco listened in closely for any sound but there wasn't any.
" Are you alright in there?" he questioned. The silence was disturbing. He pulled out his wand aiming for the door knob. " I'm coming in" he announced.
"No!" Reina yelled. " I'm fine! Totally fine, I promise!"
" Bloody hell!" Draco exclaimed tucking his wand back in his sleeve. " Why won't you answer me? I thought you were dead or something"
"I, uh, fell asleep in the bathtub?" Reina tried to come up with an excuse. She had frozen in fear, so much so that she couldn't even find the words to answer. She wondered briefly if she had imagined the whole thing.
" Are you asking me?" Draco sounded irritated.
"No, but I guess that's what must have happened" she thought "anyway, I'll be out in a minute."
"Good" he replied " now if you don't mind I've made some arrangements with my mother. Your mother and her will be waiting for us in the Leakey Cauldron."
" This is perfect! Thank you!" Reina perked up immediately.
" I'm glad you think so. Now get ready, we will be traveling by floo powder to save time" Draco said and turned to head back to the main hall.
She jumped out of the tab grabbing the towel and wrapping it around her trembling body. The water had gotten cold before her noticing and now she was freezing. She quickly unlocked the door and inspected the hallway. No one was in sight so she made her way to her bedroom. She was about to close the door when she heard the whispers return.
"Reina... so beautiful ... little Reina , come to usssssss" the voice called once more. It was scaring her. She reached for her wand and turned around ready to defend herself from this unseen presence.
"Who is there?" she shouted, inspecting the seemingly empty hallway. Reina took a step forward in order to investigate but came to a halt as she felt something cold and slimy passing by her foot. She looked down only to see a great mass of black scales slithering on the floor. She screamed and instinctively jumped back in a desperate attempt to get away from the creature, only to stumble and fall backwards. Her hand found the edge of the vanity in an attempt to steady herself, but the move was so sudden that she ended up bringing it down on top of her. Reina closed her eyes. The sound of glass shuttering filled the room and she felt dizzy as hot sticky liquid began running down her face.
There were footsteps on the stairs leading to the second floor and suddenly the door to the room opened wide to reveal Draco. Panic was distinct in his face as he spotted Reina's figure under the wooden structure. He quickly lifted the debris off of her and bent down to inspect her injuries. His lips parted in surprise as he noticed the gash on her forehead.
" What happened?" he questioned.
" Uh...the snake" Reina mumbled.
" Bertha!" roared Draco. Immediately the little house elf apparated next to him.
" Yes master" she addressed him. " How can Bertha help?"
" Don't you just stand there like an idiot, fix this!" the boy spat. Without hesitating, Bertha begun mending the furniture, while Draco removed his wand from its hiding place.
"Vulnera Sanentur" Draco chanted the incantation and immediately the flow of blood on Reina's forehead seemed to ease.
" Well that is impressive" Reina was visibly much better and smiling. " I didn't know you were so good with healing magic".
" What on earth have you been doing up here?" he asked angrily.
" Well, I told you. There was a huge snake outside my door" Reina stood up as the boy finished his incantation.
" What's this about a snake?" Draco looked at her in disbelief. " Do you honestly expect me to believe that a reptile is roaming the halls of this manor and nobody knows?"
" Well that's what I saw!" she was beginning to lose her patience and Draco seemed to notice that.
" Maybe we should stay in for the day, clearly you are not feeling well" he was standing up now, extending a hand to help her up.
" I am fine, Draco, I'm telling you ..."
" Uhm, miss Reina, excuse Bertha..." without them noticing the little house elf has crept up behind them.
"How dare you interrupt your masters' conversation?" Draco spat and the little creature cowered.
"Stop this immediately! I won't have you talk to her this way in my room" her tone implied that this was not a request. Reina then turned towards the female elf. " Thank you for cleaning up Bertha, you my be excused now" she said softly, but noticed that the creature was hesitant to comply. It also looked like she was cradling something in her apron. " Is there something else?" she urged gently.
" Yes miss, Bertha fixed everything. Everything but this. This she cannot fix" she said as she unfolded her apron to reveal Reina's broken wand.
