*Leah’s P.O.V.*

“So, yeah no one really knows where the original Declaration of Independence is because the one that is held in the National Archives is actually the fourth draft,” I said as I cleared my throat.  The teacher’s deep eyeswere staring deep into mine, almost as if he was trying to read my mind.

“Yes, good job…” a puzzled look appeared on Mr. O’Brien’s face.  “Refresh my memory, your name is…?” he said with a hopeful smile that said “Sorry I forgot your name.”

“It’s Leah,” I said with a slight smile.

“Ah, yes,” Mr. O’Brien said with a clap of his hands, “everyone take a good look at Leah over here: already getting the correct answers on the first day of class!”  He leaned towards me and put out his balled up fist.  I tried to smile but I’m sure my face was somewhat horrified.  I fist bumped him back, noticing that my face was probably red from embarrassment.  What teacher fist bumps?  I looked around the class (I was trying to be nonchalant but failed miserably) when my eyes were caught on Austin’s gaze, or according to me “Mr. Perfect.”  Our eyes locked on one another for what was just a few seconds, but in my mind felt much longer.  I felt like everything got really awkward so I looked away from his gaze and then I looked at him again, half smiling at him, hoping that would make everything less awkward.  He returned the smile so naturally, I looked away.

Just a few minutes later, I was getting so distracted and lost in thought about Austin, which is exactly what he wanted.  I’ve always referred to him as Mr. Perfect because he literally is perfect, or at least he pretends to be.  He has the perfect hair and smile, he plays sports, and he always throws the best parties, and is the most popular kid in our senior class.  I’ve known him for years, but he never seemed like my type of person.

I glanced over in Austin’s direction.

Shit, I wasn’t going to let him do this.

Thank God he wasn’t looking at me when I looked at him because when I did, he was talking to Taylor, his ex-girlfriend and the slut of the school.  She was being really touchy-feely and his face looked like he couldn’t stand her, which made me laugh.

Class seemed to fly by and before I knew it, the bell was ringing.  I picked up all my stuff from my desk, struggling to keep my grip on everything.  Just as I was about to leave, Mr. O’Brien called my name.

            “Yeah?” I responded.

“I just thought I’d ask, what do you think about joining the history club?”

I thought about his offer for a few seconds… “Um…I’m not sure right now, but I probably could get you an answer by tomo-“

            SMACK!

What the hell was that noise?  My neck immediately snapped towards the direction the noise came from, noticing that Austin and Taylor were still in the classroom.

Taylor had dropped her binder on the floor.  She bitch smiled at Mr. O’Brien and apologized before she bent down to grab it.  She looked back at Austin who was rolling his eyes at her.

“Uh, anyways Mr. O’Brien,” I said trying to break up the awkward silence that had filled the room, “I’ll think about it tonight and let you know,” I said with a smile.

We said our goodbyes and I headed out into the busy hallway.  I always hated class change.  I tried to push my way through the crowd when I heard a familiar voice calling me from behind.

*Austin’s P.O.V.*

“Look Taylor,” I said through clinched teeth, trying to keep my voice down, “I don’t need you or even want you, okay?  Get over it please…”

She just can’t let go!  We dated over a year ago and she still won’t leave me alone.  I will never date her again because now I realized how much of a slut she is.  It’s so wrong to cheat and Taylor had done her fair share of cheating

I looked at her and she looked like she was about to cry.  I didn’t mean to make her cry and it made me feel bad but I had to get the point across one way or another.

“Well, I’m just going to go to Pre Calc, sorry to inconvenience you,” she said with attitude, turning to grab her books from her desk.  She started to walk past me and I knew I should just let her go but I knew I would feel bad if I made her upset.  I honestly hate Taylor but we went through a lot together and I still care about her, even though she always gets on my nerves.

“Wait,” I said grabbing her arm as she tried to walk past me.

        SMACK!

Smooth Mahone, you made her drop her book.  And now Mr. O’Brien and Leah are staring.  Awesome, score one for me and creating awkward moments.  Trust me, I would’ve been nice and grabbed Taylor’s binder from the ground but I couldn’t stop watching Leah watch the awkward moment.

Leah started talking to Mr. O’Brien again and I turned back to Taylor.  “Sorry, I didn’t mean to make you drop that, I just wanted to say-“

“Forget about it,” Taylor snapped before practically running out of the classroom.

Oh well, I’m just gonna leave that alone.  All of a sudden, I realized Leah wasn’t in the classroom anymore.  I threw my bookbag on my shoulder and sprinted out into the hallway.  I spotted Leah not too far in front of me.

“Hey, Leah?”  Wait, what was I going to say to her?  “Leah, wait up!” I shouted.  I’m so stupid.  She turned around and once she realized that it was me who was calling her name, her expression turned into complete confusion.  I jogged to catch up with her.

“Hey Leah,” I said, smiling at her.

“Um, hi?”  She said, furrowing her eyebrows together.

            “Yeah, hey, I’m Austin.”

She let out a small chuckle and nodded.  “Yeah, you are.”

What the hell am I doing?  “Right, right.  Anyway, so in class you really impressed me…with your answers and stuff…”  How do I have friends?  I can’t even carry on normal conversations.  What’s wrong with me?  Where’s my charm at, man?

Leah didn’t say anything so I just kept rambling.  “So I was thinking, maybe we could be study buddies for American History?” I asked with a cheesy smile plastered on my face.  Leah stopped and looked up at me with her blue eyes that seemed to be filled with questions.  “So I was thinking that maybe I could get your number so we can help each other out with homework and stuff,” I told her.

She smiled at me, showing off her gorgeous dimples.  “I think you’ll have to try a little harder than that,” she said as she turned to walk away into her next class.

I stood in the hallway where Leah had left me trying to process what had just happened.  I pressed my tongue onto the inside of my cheek, and turned away, smiling.

        She’s confident.
