*Austin's P.O.V.*
"I'll take you anywhere, I'll put you on a throne, I lay down my heart I swear and I'll make sure that you'll never be alone," I sang as I strummed on my guitar. I've been reading online that people who are in comas can hear what's going on around them. I even read this one page where people's families played their favorite songs and singers in their hospital rooms while they were in comas and it woke them up.
"Only my shadow knows how I feel about you and only my shadow goes where I dream of you and me...should I go or wait? Is it too soon, too late? Cause only my shadow knows..."
Leah's been getting a lot better and her doctor says that she could wake up anytime.
"So I'll wait another day, maybe another year, I'm gonna be right here...that's all I've gotten so far, Leah. I hope you liked it...happy three months, Beautiful," I told her as I leaned forward and kissed her forehead.
"Hey Austin," I heard a voice call as I turned around.
"Hey, Mrs. Williams," I called to her. She walked over to the bed and placed her hand on my back.
"Are you hungry or tired or anything?" she asked.
"Yeah, I'm pretty hungry," I answered.
"Well run down and get some Subway or something. Are you keeping up with your schoolwork?"
"Yeah...I mean none of my teachers are thrilled that I'm not there but I don't want to go to school with her here. I would feel so weird not walking through the hallways with her or driving home without her next to me..."
"Well," she said, "just go get something to eat. And you could go home if you want. I'm sure your mom misses you. I'll call you first if anything changes with her, okay?" I turned around and looked at her. She was so understanding."Yes ma'am," I told her as I stood up from the edge of Leah's bed and grabbed my guitar. I put it in its case and stood up with it in my hand. I headed for the door.
"Hey, Austin?" Mrs. Williams said. I looked at her and raised my eyebrows. "Thanks for being with Leah like you have. I know she's appreciative, and so are we." I smiled at her and headed out of the hospital.
*Chloe's P.O.V.*
I stood in the elevator waiting for it to stop on Leah's floor. Finally, it slowed down and the doors opened. I took a deep breath as I headed for her room. "4511...4511," I mumbled to myself. "Hey y'all," I said when I saw Leah's parents sitting in the waiting area outside her room.
"Hey, Chloe!" Mrs. Williams said as she jumped up and hugged me.
"How are you doing, Chloe?" Leah's dad asked me.
"Um, it's hard. I've been seeing a psychologist because I keep having nightmares of it but that's nothing compared to how Leah is. How's she doing since I last came?"
"Well, not much has changed in two days, Chloe," her mom told me, chuckling. "She's getting better though, which is better news than we could've ever hoped for. Dr. Wright told us that she can wake up any time so we're trying to take off as much time from work as we can. They were giving her a bath so we just came out here to wait." I nodded and sat down in the chair beside her dad, Ryan. "You could go ahead back there if you want, Chloe. I'm sure they're almost done anyway."
I stood up and headed towards her room. The door was closed so I knocked. A voice called from the inside so I went into the room.
"Hi Miss, are you family? Only family is allowed in here right now."
"I practically am family, it's okay," I smiled at the nurse. "I'm Chloe."
"Hi. I'm Katie," she nodded at me. "We're almost down here, aren't we Leah?" she shouted at Leah. Wow, that really is 'treating her like nothing's wrong,' isn't it? I rolled my eyes. "Alright," she said rubbing Leah's face with a rag, "there we go." She grabbed the tub of soapy water and exited the room, pulling the door shut.
"Hey, Leah...The new Seventeen magazine came out today so I brought it...I thought that maybe I could read it to you. Oh, but let me tell you about Alex...it was the sweetest thing," I said, taking a seat at the end of her bed. "So, yesterday was Sunday, he brought me breakfast from McDonald's. And it was the good chicken biscuit, not the cheap dollar ones, you know. But anyway, he brought that over and we ate it in my room and then we got ready and headed to church. And you know how everyone is there, making assumptions and all that. So Mary walks over first though and she goes, 'Hey Chloe, who do we have here?' and I was like, 'This is Alex, we go to school together' and then she has to go, 'Oh are y'all dating?' and I had no idea what to say cause I didn't want to friendzone Alex but I didn't want to seem pushy, you know? So I just looked at Alex and awkwardly halfway smiled and he looked at Mary and said, 'Yeah we are' and then after she walked away he was like 'Well, if that's okay with you' so now we're official and I'm so excited...you know," I paused, "you've gotta wake up so you, me, Austin and Alex can go on double dates. It's like Jenna and Matty and Tamara and Jake on Awkward," I said chuckling. "But you gotta wake up soon so we can double date to go to the Winter Formal at school."
*Austin's P.O.V.*
I pulled my burger out of the bag and unwrapped it, laying it on the table. I took the first bite out of it and it tasted better than the last one I had. Then again, I hadn't had a sub in a while anyway.
"Austin?" my mom called.
"In the kitchen!" I yelled back at her.
"Hey Poo Bear," she said giving me a hug. "Did you bring lunch home with you today?" My mouth was full so I just nodded. "How's Leah doing?"
"Great. Her doctor said she'll be waking up soon and her mom promised me that she'd call me if anything changed so I'm gonna wait for that, I guess," I told Mom.
"Yeah, you need to get your rest, Austin. Maybe you should go to school tomorrow to just see about turning in your work or getting the stuff they're gonna cover soon, you know?" she suggested.
"I guess I could do that," I said nodding.
"Austin, I have to talk to you about something," she said sitting down in the chair across from me. "So this morning when I was at work, I got a call and you'll never guess who it was."
"I don't know, Aunt Lisa? Robin?"
"It was your brother."
