Chapter 2
Expect The Unexpected
- EDEN GARCIA -
"Alright kids, I'm leaving," Mum announces, coming into the kitchen where her six kids are either raiding the fridge for food or eating all the food.
"Bye," Myles says around a mouthful of Nutri Grain. He stands up to give mum a hug, which she returns with a broad smile.
"Make sure you eat slowly," she reminds him, looking thoroughly amused. "We don't want you choking or something."
"Yes we do," Brody says, smothering his words in a cough.
Kenzie, Jayde, Caleb and I burst out laughing, as mum attempts to fix her eldest child with a glare. Myles, being the immature fifteen-year-old boy he is, sticks his tongue out at his brother.
"Anyway," Mum continues, "Kelli B- one of my clients- and her family are coming over for dinner tonight so just beware. Apparently she has kids your age or something."
Dad may co-own a successful law firm, but Mum owns her own line of fashion. As a fashion designer, she's frequently creating new collections and hosting shows wherever required. Once a year, the family flies to Paris for Mum's major event at the Paris Fashion Show.
Jayde steps up to engulf Mum in a hug, followed shortly by Kenzie as the conversation is continued.
"By 'our age', are we talking little like Myles or granny-age like Brody?" Caleb questions, the hidden meaning behind his question not going unnoticed by anyone.
"I'll have you know I am not old," Brody speaks up immediately.
"And you're only two years older than me," Myles pipes up, his mouth once again stuffed with Nutri Grain.
"That would imply that I'm even older than 'granny age'," Mum comments, raising an eyebrow at her fourth child.
Caleb smirks, using his amazing drama skills to save himself by saying, "Mum, we all know you're the exception. I mean, look at you; you're nowhere near old."
Mum lets out a laugh, pulling him into a hug. "C'mere you."
"Sometimes I swear I'm the only half-normal person in this entire family," I mutter.
Brody punches me lightly in the shoulder, rolling his eyes, "Keep dreaming, sis. I can assure you right now none of us are anywhere near normal."
"Amen to that," Jayde nods, laughing.
"Objection!" Myles cuts in, hitting the tabletop loudly with his spoon as though he's in court. The action sends droplets of milk flying everywhere.
"Myles!" Mum scolds.
"I am the most normal-" he tries.
"My point exactly," Brody sings, speaking over everyone.
"It's a fucking madhouse. I'm gonna head out. See you guys this arvo," Caleb says loudly, trying to be heard as he picks up his bag and strolls out of the kitchen with his car keys in hand.
"Wait!" Myles calls, "I need a ride!"
He shoves one last spoonful of cereal in his mouth before bolting out of the door after his brother.
Mum quickly gives both Brody and I a hug, after which she mutters, "He didn't even clean up the milk."
"Maybe you should finally decide to hire a cleaner," Brody suggests.
