Chapter 17

The Verdict

- EDEN GARCIA -

"MYLES! GIVE ME BACK MY PURSE!" Jayde screams, acting as my Saturday morning alarm clock.

Groaning, I bury my face into my pillow and try to zone out the sounds I can hear coming from one of the rooms down the hallway. If I know my younger siblings at all, they're probably wrestling; Jayde, to get her purse back, and Myles, because he likes to piss everyone off.

A couple minutes later the thumping sound of footsteps echoes throughout the house instead, as loud as a drum.

"MYLES!" Jayde raises her voice again, effectively bringing back the unwanted alarm clock. "MYLES I WILL KILL YOU!"

"BE QUIET, KIDS!" Comes dad's voice

"CALEB!" Myles yells.

"WHAT?" Caleb has always been an early riser- he's probably already been awake for the past two hours or something.

Any further conversation between them cannot be heard. The house falls into a state of silence again, much to my relief, and I can feel sleep threatening to drag me under once more.

And then it's back.

"MYLES!" Jayde continues. "JUST STOP IT. I DON'T HAVE THE PATIENCE FOR YOUR CRAP!!"

"KENZIE!" Myles yells, probably now seeking out her help following a rejection from Caleb. Needless to say, he doesn't get a response. "I KNOW
YOU HEARD ME."

"YEAH YOU'RE AS LOUD AS A BLUE WHALE," she grumbles in response.

The sound of footsteps thudding down the hallways recommences. And I know it's only a matter of time until...

"EDEN!"

There it is.

I don't even have a chance to reluctantly respond before my bedroom door clicks open quietly and Myles appears, slipping inside and closing the door without a sound.

"No. No," I immediately begin to protest. "Midget, you're not dragging me into your mess. Get out."

"Come on, Blondie- you're the only sibling I have who is cool enough to harbour a criminal. You're my only chance."

Should I be taking any offence to that?

"No."

"Naw, c'mon sis."

"No."

"But I don't want to face Jayde."

"You think I want to face her? She's downright ruthless when she's mad."

"I know," he mumbles, smirking.

"MYLES!" Her voice is closer than before. She's coming.

His eyes widen and he drops to his knees on the floor, clasping his hands in front of him and giving me his best attempt at an endearing expression; the puppy dog eyes. As though that would change my mind.

Honestly, when he gives me that look it just makes me want to punch him in the face. So badly.

"I WILL FIND YOU!"

"GO BACK TO SLEEP!" Dad yells.

"NOT UNTIL I FINISH THIS."

"SHUT UP," Brody growls in frustration.

I hear a door bang against the wall. Footsteps. Another door bangs open. More footsteps. Another door. Again, more footsteps.

"She's searching the rooms. C'mon, give the poor a helping hand," Myles bargains.
