Vague Excuses

He was supposed to call an hour ago. What had happened? She was starting to panic. She texted again, asking if he was there. She bit her nails and kept waking up the phone to see if it was working.

The battery drained.

She cursed to herself and plugged it in, then lay beside it crying. She felt in her heart something must be wrong. He had been talking to her less lately. They gave up sleeping together a while ago. He's been saying he's busy with school. He didn't seem that "into" her like he used to. When she questioned him about this, he was vague. He deflected her questions with "idk" and "been busy". She was worried that he was okay. He kept saying he was, but she didn't believe him.

Why couldn't things go back to the way they were before? He always used to make her feel safe and secure. He was her rock when stresses came to her life, and believe me, there were a lot.

Now it felt like her whole life was unraveling before her eyes. He was the only one she could turn to, and now she was alone. Even her best friend had been acting distant lately. Everyone was abandoning her, it seemed. What did she do to deserve this? Of course, she blamed herself – she had a habit of doing that.

She had been compensating by being extra sweet to him, extra sexy to him, trying to win him back. He took the sex, but didn't return the sweetness. It left her feeling empty and used.

To calm herself, she looked over their memorabilia of the last three years. The old poems, the cute pictures, the late night chats, which she tried to read through blurry eyes. Those were happy memories, and for a while she could get lost in them.

But in the end, the reality came back, and it hurt even more.
