Chapter 1: Night Dragon

Astrid was a normal girl.  Hiccup was her best friend.  Dragons rarely disturbed the village.  Some old men of the village could recount tales of murderous fire-breathing dragons that destroyed the village time and time again.  But Astrid didn't believe their tales.  Her mother had said they weren't true.

     Every day was a routine:

1. Get up

2. Eat

3. Be bored

4. Eat

5. Be bored

6. Eat

7. Be bored until nightfall

8. Go to bed

Here's the part of Astrid's routine that her parents don't know about:

9. As soon as they fall asleep, leave through the window

10. Meet Hiccup at the bay

11. Go searching for dragons.

Astrid knew her parents would dislike her hanging out with the chief's son, and looking for dragons more so.  But all the same, she did both.  When the moon appeared to have disappeared, the two would sneak around town.  It happened once a month, and they were free to taste apples left behind at the market or swipe a few steaks for dragon bait.

Tonight, though, was not a new moon.  They had to stick to the woods.  Astrid jumped off the window and sprinted down the wagon trail.

Astrid loved to explore.  But even more she loved finding dragons.  She would never forget what dragon they found that night.  Black as night it was.  Its eyes were green and seemed to glow in the moonlight.  It had large paws and claws but didn't seem to want to use them.  But the strangest thing about it was that it didn't have teeth.

When they found the creature, Astrid had pulled out her guide to dragons.  "It's a Night Fury!" she exclaimed. "Aren't those supposed to be extinct?"

"I thought they were extinct," said Hiccup, "but I guess they aren't."  Astrid grinned and slowly approached the friendly creature.  It huffed at her and growled before running into the depths of the forest.

Days later, they encountered him again.  His strange flapped tail was caught between two rocks and he was roaring so loud she couldn't believe that Thor hadn't heard it.  Hiccup freed his tail.  The dragon glared at Astrid before leaning into Hiccup.

The chief's son brought the Night Fury to town, to the great excitement of the tribe.  The Night Fury slept in his house, ate in his house, and (unfortunately) burnt all the furniture.  It turned out the the Night Fury had retractable teeth, which he only displayed when he was offended or eating.  Hiccup thought he was a wonder, and so did Astrid, and so did the village.

But Astrid was upset.  Truth be told, Astrid was actually the one who found the dragon.  She had noticed a dragon perched on the edge of the cliff.  And when they saw he had no teeth, she was the one who named him Toothless.  Why should Hiccup have gotten him?

But as Astrid grew older, year by year, she learned to accept destiny.  She learned not to react to everything that bothered her.  She became more and more drawn in every year, and Hiccup saw less of her, until he saw her no more.  She took to adventuring by the cliff and the lake, hoping to find a Night Fury of her own.

But her hope drowned a little more every day, until there was none left at all.  She took to feeding the birds and watching the fish as she wondered if anything would get better.

Little did she know, things wouldn't get better.  They'd get worse.
