"How Long Have You Been Standing Here?" "Hours.."

  The breeze gently brushed against the plants and shrubbery in the surrounding area. The evening sun blaring down at the town. James heard a small rustle but ignored it completely. He looked down at the small village from the hill before his thoughts were broken by a sudden voice from behind him. 

 "How long have you been standing there?" 

 James whipped around to see a woman around his age peering out from the trees. She had her chestnut-brown hair neatly tied up with a few loose strands at the front. He turned his attention back to the view. 

 "Hours." 

Soon this place will be no more.. all that will be left is ash and rubble.. may as well see it one last time... 

The girl started to walk towards him. She stood beside him and stared down at the view with him for a few seconds before she started to speak again. 

"Your father asked me to give you this." 

She held out a small box with blue and white patterns around it and a red ribbon holding it together. James began to carefully untie the ribbon. 

"Things have been tough recently, but he believes you are strong enough to make it through this." The final piece of wrapping paper was taken off to reveal a small navy blue box. He lifted the lid to reveal a small aquamarine gem inside. Small markings were cut into the back. Swirls and arches. 

There was a note attached to the back. 

"This was your mother's before she died. Her dying wish was that you would receive this and keep it safe. The hill will give you answers to your questions about this gift. Good luck..." 

Wait.. the handwriting is different on this last part... 

"Farewell, my son." 

It was his mother's...
