The Beginning & The End

I've heard people talk about love at first sight and I admit that I've always thought it was complete bullshit.

How can you possibly love someone that you don't even know? It all started making sense when I met him.

He was the guy that no one ever sat with and no one dared cross, but he was also the guy who took care of his sick mother when he could be hanging out with friends.

Although, no one took the chance to find out what he was really like.

His name was Sam and from the moment our eyes met, I knew he was the one I'd fall in love with. Little did I know, he felt the same.

We first spoke on a Wednesday in the math class that we shared. His voice was rough, but kind. The type of sound you'd want to hear when it was pouring rain at one a.m.

Soon enough, that was when I'd be hearing it.

We exchanged numbers after a few weeks of small talk in class. I found out that his favorite color was blue, his zodiac was a Gemini and he had a broken heart.

I wondered what had happened to make him so sad and how I could possibly make it better.

I never thought Sam liked me, much less loved me, but the last night I ever saw him, he confessed his true feelings.

He said, "You're the only one who has ever made me feel alive. When I look into your eyes, I see the ocean and a storm, all in one."

That was the last thing I ever heard him say. After that night on the phone, he missed two weeks of school.

After he was gone for a month, I figured he wouldn't be coming back. I couldn't help but relive that first day I saw him.

That day replayed in my head along with the last time we spoke.

It was an endless loop and I couldn't figure out why he possibly would've just disappeared. There were rumors that he went back to jail, but I knew better.

It wasn't until I got an anonymous letter in the mail that all my questions were answered.

Hailey,

I'm sorry to leave without telling you goodbye, but I knew that if I saw you, I wouldn't be able to do what I had to. My mother passed away the day before I left. I couldn't bear to stay in that town without her.

I just want to let you know that you and her were the only things that kept me going. The day I saw you in the cafeteria, I knew I'd fall for you. Believe me, I did. Telling you this makes it that much harder to leave, but I know you'll understand.

Thank you for showing me what true love feels like. Thank you for helping me find my purpose in life. You'll always be my shining star.

Love,

Sam.
