Raven left the school building with a heavy heart. She would have to go back home and face her mean dad. Her mom had divorced and left so quickly she forgot about Raven, so she was stuck with her dad. She clutched her moms black locket around her neck and wished for the millionth time that she would come home for her. Her mom was loving, kind, and would always talk to Raven kindly, even when she messed up. Her dad however, was short tempered and drunk most of the time. He would be cruel to Raven and sometimes even hit her. Raven drug her feet out and walked out of the school slowly. "Come on slowpoke," an orange eyed girl said, pushing her way ahead of Raven. She sighed and walked on, counting the flowers and buildings she saw. Soon she reached her little house. She was regretting going inside, but she knew she had to. When she walked in, there was no mom to greet her or ask about how her day was. Raven just saw her dad, passed out on the couch with the T.V. on and a beer bottle in his hand. There were three
more empty bottles lying on the floor. Raven sighed and climbed the creaky stairs to her room. Her room was very humble and small, but she still loved it. It was a way to escape from all her stress and relax. Her bed was small and had black covers to match her black pillowcase. Her treasured black cat, Magic, sat lying on her bed. A tiny desk with a few books on it was facing the window, with a dim lamp and a creaky wooden chair to match. The only other thing in her room was her dresser with her few pairs of clothes and an alarm clock to tell time. Raven plopped down her backpack at her desk and started her homework. It was math and took her a long time. If her mom was here, she could have asked her for help. And if she was brave enough to talk to people, she might have friends that she could call. She sighed, put her math homework away, and started reading her Harry Potter book. Raven secretly wished she could be whisked away to Hogwarts and actually fit in. She read until she got hungry around 6:30. Not wanting to go downstairs for food in case her dad was awake, she pulled out a smushed granola bar from her backpack and ate it, savoring every last delicious bite. Then she read for a little bit more and suddenly she heard the stairs creaking. Her dad was coming up. She held her breath, turned off the lamp, and then pretended to be asleep. Her dad wobbled into the room. "Oh-good-Ravens-asleep already," he said in an extremely woozy voice. Then he stumbled out of the room, leaving the door wide open, and went downstairs. Raven listened and heard the fridge being opened. She sighed, closed the door, and continued reading. Soon she grew tired. She sneaked into the bathroom across the hall and quickly rinsed herself off. Then she put on her tattered pajamas and neatly put her clothes back in her dresser, making sure to hide her mother's locket safety in between the clothes piles. Then she got into bed, clutched Magic, prayed that her mom would come back, and fell fast asleep.
