Alex Smith was a great boy. He always did as his parents said, was very talented and had good grades. His parents got him into the game of chess, a game were you have to use strategy to win. He imideatly loved it. Once he got good at the game, his parents started to sign him up in chess games that the Town had every month. He always won the competition, every single month. People started to call him "Checkmate" because he was very good at the game.

His parents signed him up for the chess championships. He won every single round he competed in. His parents saw he had a gift for the game and prayed that he made it to the finals. After weeks of competition, he did get into the finals. That that was the most exiting day for Alex. He had the chance to finally be good at something... since everyone at school made fun of him for being an outcast and a nerd for liking chess.

On the way to the place where they we're hosting the championships, his family and him had a car accident. Alex was thought to be dead, but, he survived. On the scene of the accident they had his body under a robe. There, he woke up, taking the robe off and seeing the cops. He heard a strange voice that told him to go run off to the woods. Without thinking, he did. While in the woods, he saw a small wood cabin, he knocked on the door and once it opened, he was greeted by an old woman. She told him to come inside and asked if he was hungry, he answered by noding his head and saying yes. While watching the television the old woman had on her living room, he saw a news report about his car accident, it said -Local family part of terrible car accident, two victims were fine, while the other one died. The kid was on his way to the league championships of chess to play in the finals, but since he didn't make it, his opponent won by default-.

Hearing this devastated Alex, his entire life's work was only to win that championship. He said -I wish I could go back..., that trophy... that glory should have been mine...-. Hearing what the boy said, the old lady said -I can help you-. When he heard the woman say this he asked how. She replied -This world is full of dark magic my boy... even though most people don't know about it.... And I could help you with a spell I have learned that could bring you back... I am a witch after all...-. He didn't believe her at first, but with no hope agreed to use the spell, so the witch did. After she used the spell, the boy looked in the mirror. He looked like a freak. Half of his face was black while the other side was white, he had sharp theeth and his eyes where black, like looking into a black hole. The witch said -Now, my dear Checkmate, you can win your title and have your life back-. After saying this, she vanished. This was how Checkmate came to be, but, this is only the start of his story.
