MerDer One-shot
Finding Each other
Meredith, a petite blond woman sat on her mother's couch. Her mother had died a few months ago from a brain tumor. She wasn't close at all with her yet she couldn't explain the sharp aching pain in her heart. Meredith's mother: Ellis Grey was a surgeon. Tomorrow, that's what Meredith hoped to become, an extraordinary surgeon just like her mother. Tomorrow Meredith starts her internship at Seattle Grace Hospital. She was nervous out of her mind. Her knees knocked together just thinking about it. She wasn't nervous about the surgery herself, but not being able to be as good as her mother or failing at the one thing her mother had truly loved, thinking about all of this terrified her. Her mother; though, had tried to love her daughter, never really did. Meredith knew, Her father did at least until he had left them for another woman, and as much as she wished her mother knew how she felt, she didn't and that couldn't be changed know. Meredith, deep in thought was pulled out of it by a box tumbling down behind her. She jumped, startled and decided to head to sleep. She knew she had to wake up very early for her 48-hour shift tomorrow.
The next morning, she woke up at 5 am and got to the hospital at 6. Her hands were sweating and she was trying hard not to shake as she pushed through the hospital doors. She walked toward the elevators with her head down as she tried to clear her head of all distractions. As she scurried by, her shoulder roughly jabbed into someone else, she looked up quickly apologized: " Sorry, my bad." Then looks down again. She raised her head slightly as she realized who she had bumped into. He was a tall man, with a toned figure, bright sparkling blue eyes, and lots of dreamy dark hair, and he smelled... wow, he smelled amazing, though she couldn't quite recognize what it was. He flashed her a bright smile, and Meredith having no control over herself smiled back.
" It's okay" The man replied while offering his hand,
" Hi I'm Derek Shepherd," he said cheerfully grinning again. She replied
" Hi, I'm Meredith Grey."
Derek laughed, turned around, and walked away. Meredith's heart was now pounding out of her chest.
" Wow" She whispered to herself, "Wow"
She then dashed into the elevator, not wanting to be late on her first day of course.
She had now met the other interns assigned to the same resident: Dr. Miranda Bailey. They were all good people, she liked all of them but Cristina the most. Cristina was kind of a know it all but Mer didn't mind. She was the kind of person Meredith wanted in her corner. She knew they would both have experiences of a lifetime together. She has also learned a bit about the doctor she has met earlier. He was Derek Shepherd as she knew, but he was also very new to the hospital. She had also learned that Derek was a neuro attending.
Pondering on her first 48-hour shift, she walked out of the building.
Also leaving at the same time was Derek, he was also still thinking about her. He had dated lots of women but her, there was something different, something fresh. He also could not get the sight of her mid-length blonde hair, her dazzling grey-blue eyes, or the way they lit up when she smiled out of his head, all he wanted to do was make her smile again. As he walked out he saw her up in front of him, and he rushed to catch up with her. It was raining outside as it often does in Seattle. Being from New York, Derek didn't have an umbrella. As he caught up to Meredith he says:
" I'm sorry to do this but I seem to have forgotten by Umbrella, could you walk with me to my car. " He says very embarrassedly, his cheeks flushing with pink. She laughs at him, then pauses a moment and replies
" Sure why not." To both fit under the umbrella they squish together, Meredith laughs again as he presses up against her arm looking like a scared little boy trying to stay out of the rain. He then laughs again his eyes gleaming
" I'm from New York, I'm not used to all this rain." He says gesturing around him. " It's okay." She replies
. " You'll get used to it. I actually have just moved back to Seattle. I lived in Boston when I was little. I've just moved back into my mother's old house, there is a ton of room, I don't know what I am going to do with it"
" Meredith", he says " We just met, we certainly shouldn't move in together, I think this is moving a little to fast. He tries not to laugh as he says that but fails at the ends. His smiles run upwards and he laughs for a couple seconds as she joins him laughing. They both stop and get lost in each other's eyes. Derek slowly starts to lean in. Meredith does the same, the tension between them slowly building up, when they hear someone exit the hospital doors, causing them to jump apart. Derek looks at the ground mutters a "goodbye" and she says the same, while quickly turning away. Derek stares at her longingly wondering what it actually would have been like to touch lips. He then smiles telling himself it won't be long until he will find out.
The next few days neither of them see each other. Bailey seems to like Meredith to intern to General Surgeons more than Neuro, which Derek is. Then finally, One day a miracle happens and Meredith is put on Derek's service. She walks up to him. Mer smiles widely but also a little timidly after their last almost kiss a few days ago she doesn't know how he is going to react. He grins back at her and says " Follow me" with a little smirk on his face. He leads her into a patient's room and asks her to read the chart. She begins to read " Samantha Adams, In for the removal of a small tumor," She begins to read more when she can't help but notice Derek smirking at her and checking her out. She holds back her giggle, but a small smile erupts from her face. Derek thinks about how adorable her smile is and how he could see it for the rest of his life. She is able to finish reading the chart, somehow. Derek talks to the patient. She is trying to pay attention, but every few seconds Derek would turn around and wink, smirk, or smile a little at her. She can't help but chuckle. Soon enough the patient, who is in her twenties, catches on and asks:
" Would you two like some time alone?" Meredith turns a little red but Derek seems to be enjoying embarrassing her. He finishes talking the patient through the surgery and turns around. He and Meredith walk out of the room together trying to keep their laughs in. Derek suddenly feeling inspired, grabs her hand and pulls hers quickly through the hospital. She squirms, not enjoying the stares they are getting. They get closer to an open on-call room door and Derek swings her through then shuts it. He grabs her waist and pushes her into the wall. He slowly begins to kiss her. As soon as he does Meredith kisses him back, harder, swiping her tongue across his lips begging for access. They kiss then Derek begins to kiss down her neck and starts moving his lips to her chest. She quickly pushes his head up. " What are we doing" she whispers. "Do you really want to focus on that right now?" He replies. She shakes her head then pulls off her shirt, as he does the same. She feels his warm hands running up her back and into her hair. They continue, getting lost in each other.
About 30 minutes later they finish and lay back into the bed in the on-call room. She smiles at him, he returns it, his eyes sparkling the most they ever have. She begins to get up, he immediately pulls her down and gently presses her head to his chest. He feels amazingly complete with her warm body snuggled up next to his. He feels like he never wants to let her go. Eventually, his pager goes off and he kisses her quickly then get dressed and runs out of the room to answer his page. As soon as he leaves she feels her heart slow and becomes cold again. All she can think about is him, now more than ever, but she quickly realizes that she is assisting him today and throws on her clothes and rushes out, hoping no one saw them leave the same on-call room. She walks out to Cristina giving her a nasty look then turns around while rolling her eyes at Mer. I really hope she doesn't know. Meredith thinks. Derek is examining another patient when Meredith walks up behind him whispers a soft "hey" and then starts taking notes about the patient. He tries to contain his instant happiness, but as soon as he can feel her warm breath on his neck, but smiles and bites his lip uncontrollably.
