Chapter Eight

I watched his eyes widen at me, after which they returned back to normal. A nod was all I needed to see.

“You’re Angela; I thought I’d never see you again.”

Richard cast a weak smile at me; that grin still as charming as ever. He pulled me into a hug and whispered by my ear, “I never stopped loving you.”

Those same features, how could I ever forget? Even the mild scent of him still lingered in my nostrils till this day, only to be renewed.

Richard raised his hand to stroke my hair. That gentle touch he placed on my head, I felt so safe and protected. I recalled the time when he had to run away because his father accidentally murdered someone. We were only 16 then. Five years since Richard’s family started hiding, we had lost all contact. I had never spoken to him in the last five years.

He told me to forget him. He said he’d bring me danger. He pleaded me to erase every single memory we had together.

I never did.

I pressed my hands on his back even tighter now. I lost him five years ago. I didn’t want to lose him again. I couldn’t afford to have him out of my life. We stayed in a tight embrace, neither of us speaking, but I sensed that he felt the same way I did.

We could finally stay together; we would never be apart. I felt the warmth and comfort shooting through my veins and around my body. That burning touch felt so real, yet so dreamy. Was this even real? I had my eyes closed, lost in a state of non-reality.

Abruptly, Richard let go.

Footsteps were approaching.

Benjamin.

“Go. Run. Just go,” Richard whispered loud enough for me to hear.

“We just met each other again…” I spoke, “I can’t aban---”

My words were cut off by Richard who pressed my lips down against his. My eyes were largely open, in utter shock and confusion. What was he doing? He opened his eyes slowly, letting mine meet with his blue charming eyes. Hypnotized, I could see the hope in them – the hope that I could get out of this place and find help to save us. Us. There would be a ‘us’ back in our lives. I felt so lost in his dazzling eyes.

“If you still love me, go,” Richard’s words snapped me out of my own little world.

I retreat, looking at him intently for a moment before giving him a quick embrace and then a peck on the cheek.

As I moved swiftly to the door, I could sense Richard watching me leave. I didn’t want to leave his side; I was scared I would never see him again. But for us, I had to go. I had to take the chance.

I peeked out from the small slit of the door and burst out of the room, on to the battlefield where I had to face Benjamin, weaponless.

I just kept running. I didn’t turn back. I knew that if I did I would want to go back for Richard. I couldn’t let that happen. I couldn’t let my heart overpower my mind. His hopes were pinned on me. Me. I had to do this, for him, for me, and for us.

“Stop!” Benjamin’s voice echoed through the corridor and into my ears.

Bang.
