Chapter 6: (Boy)
I stare at my footsteps as I walk. A pattern of black covered in neon specks laid on the floor. I get lost by staring at hues of green here and blue there then some yellow up ahead. I was never sure if I hated the carpet here at Cypressdale's movie theater or if I liked it. The flooring was meant to be hip in some ways, I'm sure. But not fit to my unquestionable taste.
"Stop looking so depressed." Nolan who walked on the left of me started saying, "she could show up any minute. You don't want to scare her off."
Uneasily I lifted my head, meeting eyes with my friend. "Well, I didn't agree to this. You basically ambushed me with news about me having a date tonight." I commented.
"Yeahh.. but it was for your own good. You need to go out with a chick. Have fun!" Nolan winks. I roll my eyes in response. "Oh come on! She's a sweet girl and she seems to really dig you." Nolan said.
"Okay sure. What's her name again?" I asked, not completely interested in the answer.
"Catherine."
Before I could say anything, an outside voice interrupts the conversation.
"Talking about me?" A dark-red headed girl parks her feet, parallel to my toes. She had curled hair, face covered mostly of different pigments which hid her natural beauty. Though I could tell right away, she couldn't compare to my mystery girl. I hadn't thought about her in awhile.. and even though I didn't know her, I missed her. I missed hearing her voice. The voice of a choir of angels. Oh how I missed—
Nolan hits me hard in the ribs with his elbow. "Grayson, you totally zoned out there for a minute. You okay?"
"Hm?" I shake my head, causing my thoughts to fly out my ears. "Yeah. I'm good." I move my gaze to the girl with the crimson locks. "Nice to meet you. I'm Grayson." I force a smile. Catherine gives a small wave, "nice to meet you too." An awkward silence grew over the three of us. "Well—" Nolan said while taking steps backwards, flickering his eyes to Catherine's then to mine, and back to hers. "I think I'm going to head out. You two love birds enjoy the movie." I was just going to protest but Catherine took that as an opportunity to wrap her hands around my arm. Leaning in close. At the same time, Nolan had already exited the building. Leaving me stranded. Catherine tugs at me, dragging me to walk by her side towards the snack stand at the front of the lobby. Almost surprisingly the line was long. "Order me a small popcorn and a diet coke, would you please?" Catherine asked, with a bat of her long inky lashes. "I must head to the ladies room."
"Yeah, sure thing." I nodded. Catherine skipped off, allowing me to resume my earlier thoughts. Ah, how I wished to see my mystery girl once more.. Her pure goodness grew off her sweet milky skin. I could never forget her blossoming aroma. Bringing tranquility within me, each time I inhaled. A smile creeped over onto my face. How can such a stranger take control over my heart and mind like this? I take a step forward as the line decreased, watching kernels trapped in glass jump and fall with excitement every second. Pop- pop- pop- The sounds of popcorn echo, until-, thunk! Hm? What was that? I thought. Searching the ground around me. Only hearing what sounded like girls laughing from behind, then locating a purse of some sort lying by my feet. I bend to reach for the bag when all of sudden something clashes in my skull. I stumble, placing my fingers on my temple. "Ouch man!" My voice rises unknowingly. "Watch what your--" I start out, angrily but then I stop. It's her! It's her! The mystery girl! My heart shouts."I am so sorry ma'am!" I quickly bite my tongue. Embarrassed of my actions. The alluring goddess has her hand upon her temple too. Eyes glistening just as beautiful as when I first saw them in the hallway days ago. Possibly even more beautiful. She doesn't speak. "We should really stop meeting like this!" I joke, hoping to soften the mood. "Yeah.. I suppose you're right.." Mystery girl replies. A short brunette stands adjacent from her. She steps forward, shoulder to shoulder with my beautiful stranger. "Who's this, Raina?" The brunette questions while giving the mystery girl a look. Raising both eyebrows up and down, repeatedly. The other girl blushes from her friends goofy way of putting her on the spot. Look how cute she is, with her cheeks all rosie from embarrassment! "Raina?" I turn back to the blonde. "That's your name?" Raina then gives a supple smile and nods her head. "That's a fine name. Haven't quite heard one like it." I say honestly. "Thank you." Raina says. I looked at her, wishing the moment didn't have to end. "My name's Jasmine by the way." The brunette says, taking my eyes off her friend. "And I'm Grayson." For the first time, I spoke with confidence. "We should all hang out sometime, but now Raina and I should probably go see our movie." As she spoke, the girls linked arms and started to walk off. Waving goodbye. I said, "okay, see ya!" and they were gone. Seconds later, Catherine shows up by my side and laces her fingers within mine. Catching me a little off guard. I quickly turn my head to her, wanting to ask her what she was doing with her hand in mine but I didn't. Instead I said, "The line hasn't moved but once since you've left. Seems like the staff is having troubles with the popcorn machine and everyone is ordering some."
"Oh, that's a shame.. Though we can't keep waiting. We're going to miss our movie." Catherine replies, and I knew she was right. So with that, we turn on our heels and standing there was Raina. The way her eyebrows creased toward the center and her coral lips pried open ever so slightly. Allowing any feelings she was thinking try to push out her mouth but couldn't. The way she looked so sad made my heart feel torn like when tectonic plates shift. Pulling away from their other half. No longer able to reach each other. "Raina.. What's wrong?" I was quick to ask. Feeling anxious. Raina seemed to stare at my hand holding Catherine's. When I realized what she was looking at, I hastily pulled off of Catherine. Leaving her hand limp by her side. I then move my palm to the back of my head, as a way to hide the fact that I let go of Catherine's hand.
"Oh.. uh.. N-n-nothing. I just forgot my purse." Raina says hesitantly. She then steps past me and picks up the bag that still remained on the floor. Without another word or even eye contact, my once mystery girl, leaves again. "What a weird girl." Catherine finally adds and walks down the pathway to our movie room. I follow, but only thinking about how terrible things must of looked in Raina's view.
