It’s About Time
Most of us knows what hazing is. It is the practice of rituals and other activities that involves harassment, abuse or humiliation. It is used as a way of initiating a person into a group. It is also seen in many different ways of social groups, including gangs, sports teams, schools, military units, and fraternities and sororities.
We were all shook by the news about the hazing victim from the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, Guillo Cesar Servando, a sophomore student. He was an 18-year-old hotel management student and was found dead in Manila last Saturday, June 28, 2014. It was after enduring alleged hazing ritual for a fraternity. The Republic Act No. 8049 strictly prohibits hazing or initiation rites in any form by a fraternity, sorority or organization without prior notice to school authorities. No physical violence must be employed by anybody during the initiation rites.
It is about time to stop hazing. Why? Because this is unacceptable, not just to the government but to us. Let us think about the future before doing something that we might regret in the end. Although it won’t bring back Guillo Servando, it would prevent others from suffering the same horrific fate.
