Syle didn't think he was a hero. He wasn't big. He wasn't strong. He hadn't quite mastered his sorcerer's staff yet. He knew he wasn't particularly outstanding, and somehow this made him believe he wasn't one for heroics.
He's not completely to blame. All those legends often depicted heroes, even the unhuman ones, as proud figures of strength and authority. Human and fairy children would oogle at larger than life Dragon Heroes on the page, a dragon friend oogling alongside them. Even ancient wizards, with their quill-scratched, swirling beards and outstretched arms were depicted emitting amazing power.
No, life is hardly ever as it is in the books. And realities not written are often lived.
Syle did not think he was one for heroics, and to the little dragon dangling above him this was a huge problem."I told you that spell was intermediate! I told you not to do it! Get me down, Syle, or I'll burn your head off!" Kimcha was holding onto the roof of a small village house. His claws were sharp enough to dig into the clay tiles, but he had no idea how long they'd handle a donkey's weight of dragon. His tail lashed, just missing the head of a young sorcerer.
"You did, you DID. If I get help they'll get rid of my staff, if I help you'll crush me what do I do?!" Syle was pacing. Accidentally launching your dragon friend onto the edge of a roof tended to be stressful.
"Just get me down!" Kimcha snapped. A puffs of stress steam were beginning to rise from between his teeth. Syle looked around frantically. There had to be something around here. Something soft.
Kimcha's stomach tensed as he heard Syle run off. He puffed some steam, growling as he tried to lift himself onto the roof.
"That total flake. I'll snap that stupid staff- ugh- I will-ach!" With a scraping noise he ripped a clay tile from the roof, accidentally launching it behind him. He clawed to get another grip, clawing through the straw where the tile once was, but to no avail.
" Syle, SYLE WHERE ARE YOU? I'M SLIPPING!!" Kimcha could feel the remaining tile cracking with his weight. He desperately dug his claw deeper into the clay, and heard a crack. He let out a final puff through his scream and tumbled tail first to the ground below!
It was moments before his screaming and flailing stopped and he realized that he was not in fact mortally wounded. He was instead covered in straw.
" See," Syle rounded the corner of the wood cart and patted Kimcha on the head. The dragon panted a little bit, grasping his tail for comfort.
"I told you it'd be fine." Syle grinned and ran off down the path before his friend came to his senses.
Behind him an angry eruption of fire and smoke lit up the sky, and without a moment's haste Syle sped off away from his furious friend. It would be hours before Kimcha spoke to Syle again.
