The danger slowly faded away as we began to head back home. Thoughts and questions circled my head like wildfire. Why was our family chosen? What was written on the altar?

Where was Ryuu?

I turned around and ran back. I felt like a fool to have forgotten one of my own. My father yelled after me, and after he realized it was futile, he chased after me. Since I got the head start, I was crashing into bushes, jumping over broken logs.

"Zoey!" My father panted.

He couldn't catch up to me. I opened the gates only to find nothing there. I quickly closed the gates and ran into the underbrush in the forest. As I cut through trees and vines I heard a wail coming from somewhere nearby. I panicked and hid in a bush in case it was a dangerous animal.

Out came Ryuu.

He was wounded badly, scars covering his body. A net was quickly cast over him, and laughter came from the other side. A pair of men came out of the bush after him. They were human.

"Finally, we managed to catch this rascal." One of them said.

"Yeah, now let's get it loaded into the truck and into town. I can't believe these things actually exist." The other replied.

"Man, we're gonna be rich after we sell this thing."

I couldn't believe what they were saying. As they were loading Ryuu into the truck, they continued to chat.

"Did you hear?"

"Hear what?"

"There's this 'holy fruit' or something in the area. It was sighted to the north of here."

"Dude, there's no such thing as a holy fruit."

"It wouldn't hurt to look."

As their conversation continued, I grew tired of them babbling. I jumped out of the bushes I was hiding in, and wacked one of the men in the head with my bow. The other one took a couple of steps back, and pulled out this strange looking crossbow.

I was shot in the thigh not long after. This arrow... it didn't look normal. It had a small sharp point, kind of like a dart.

When I was shot in the leg, I felt exhausted. The air around me grew heavy, and standing became a chore. I closed my eyes, and fell to the floor.
