Our mansion was on a grassy hill that over looked the great city. It still wasn't tall enough to look over the Walls. I got to the foot of the greenery and typed in the code. 1-8-6-4. A circular patch of greenery rolled away to reveal a tunnel bright with blue illminous lights. I walked in exhausted and placed my shopping bags into the carrier and walked into the kitchen.
The noise of crying and nagging hit me like a soundwave. "Steven, no ,no. You put the spoon in the food not in mummie's bra," said my mother. She stood facing the window holding Steven. His face was covered in green splotches. I walked as silently as I could to the counter in the middle of the room. A plate of sweet fresh cookies called my name. I trodded quietly to the bowl and reached out a trembling hannd. I almost touched one until my mother said "Don't you even dare," without turning around. I swear she was part ninja.
"I was just going to taste one," I groaned taking of my jacket.
"You know taking five cookies isn't tasting. It's gluttony.," she sighed putting Steven in his baby chair. He squealed in oblivious laughter and I kissed his forehead. "Adam's in his cott sleeping. So, what did you do today?" said my mother sitting on a high chair. Her pearl necklace glittered in the light.
"You know, bought shoes and tops and hats," I shrugged.
"Ok, well did you send it to your room?"
"Yeah, I'll go get them now. I just have one question," I said acting unintrested.
"Sandy, we have discussed this. It comes once a month and it isn't that much anyway. Plus, there are pharmicies everywhere-" she said waving me off.
"Um, no. It's not that, I want to know about what they said in the news. I mean, why are there all this talk about a world outsde the Walls? I thought the Walls were built to block out disease and rodents and waste. It it true? Is there another world? Won't it effect dad's job?" I said manicly.
"Honey, honey, honey," my mother said rapidly. "Look, I've been pretty curious too annd I can tell you I haven't found anything out. Whatever the rumours say, we have to side with the goverment. They are your dad's bosses after all. We shouldn't believe what the wind brings and you should stay away from the rumourors. Some of the people reported to start them have been harmed greatly or even killed. Just be safe,ok."
"Ok," I said as she got up, hugged me and kissed my forehead. I picked up my coat and bounded up the salmon marble stairs. I stopped at every window to see the beauty of the dark blue sky and the silhoutte lights of the city. I opened the door of my room to find my bags in the metal carrier waiting for me. I sighed tiredly as I fell onto my comfy soft bed made of pillows. I looked up at my ceiling.
It was a gift from a amateur painter my dad knew. He had spent a week making the ceiling an exact replica of the night sky. The moon stood in the left corner watching me with a pale shine and the stars clouded every inch of the shady blues. When I had nightmares, I would usually look up at the 'sky' and listen to M83 songs to lull me to sleep. M83 and stars were a great combination.
I had tried on all my outfits and hanged them in my wordrobe. The baby blanket I got for Adam and Steven rested in a blue box and the necklace and watch I got for mum and dad were hidden in the clean corner of my drawer. My birthday was coming up soon and it was a tradition to give me family gifts for my gifts. I changed into leggings and a black tank top for dinner. I admired myself in the mirror shaped like a huge giant. Peace and silence hung in the cool air until a peircing scream stabbed the serenity. My heart jumped causing me to jump too. I padded quickly down the stairs and stopped midway to an awful sight. My father stood in the doorway wide eyed. His expensive neat suit and tie was splattered the streaks of red blood. My mother had two hands covering her mouth. Her neat black hair was messy and her face damp with sweat. She must have been the one who screamed. Horror and confusion smacked me. I couldn't tell if the blood was his or someone else's.
"Dad! Dad!" I screamed as I ran down the stairs to him. My mother held me back. We just stared at him and he looked back at us. My mother still held me securely. Tears ran down her smooth light brown face. Fear surrounded us all.
"Michael, what have you done?" my mother said shakily almost breaking down. My dad said nothing. He just looked at her then me then her and straighted up. He walked to the stairs but stopped when he was beside my mother.
"Helen, go to the room now. We're leaving," said my dad sternly.
AN: What will happen? What has Sandy's Dad done? pls share and comment ;)
