I HAD TO ADMIT, I HAD an exquisite way of causing unrest among the loved, the hated and even with myself. And most certainly, all the time, I was there to witness and taste the underlying bitterness of all the unrest.
This time, the unrest caused my heart to swell and let out a flood of tears.
"What are you trying to say, Queen Anhye?" The King repeated himself, maybe the sixth or seventh time- I had lost count.
Through teary eyes and while another sob plummeted its way passed my lips, I turned to him. "I had my brother imprisoned under the charges of treason!" I did not care for my tone at that moment, or my lack of control to contain myself.
Prince Jung stood on the lower steps before the King's throne, having escorted me after we arrived back at the Palace.
"Queen! You are just repeating yourself! The Prince explained-" Worry and frustration laced the King's words, the latter much more than the other but his same question was cut off by Ki who had been with him when we returned.
"-My King, her Highness needs not anger but someone to calm her down." I felt her hand on my shoulder. "Mina, what happened?" She dropped the honorifics and dropped her voice so low that I was sure only I could hear it, above my own ears that still rung with the cries and pleas of my mother.
Taking quick breaths, I calmed the sobs down and furiously wiped away the tears that were on my face.
"My brother Ji- he was apart of the rebellion. His role was to...become the King after throwing King Gojong over. I did not regain this memory properly as this was only mentioned to me once while I was tied up and...being in that room with him...it just triggered the final piece about why I felt so uneasy."
First came disbelief which was very quite indeed and then came the thundering outburst, from both the men in the room.
"Your Highness!"
"When did you regain this memory?"
Ki's response came in the form of actions, she pulled me up, with me being smaller than her, she easily urged me up and into her arms in a bear hug. She didn't whisper anything, no promises, nothing to ensure me about.
I did not cry tears anymore, instead I found myself feeling numb, encircled by clouds that did the crying for me. Despite the fact that the rain took out the fire, I was left burnt.
I pulled back on my own after a while. My face felt swollen and my eyes much smaller.
"I'll answer as much as I can." I spoke faintly, eyes down.
"Did you go to see your brother while having this certain memory?" The question was shot from the King but his voice was much calmer and softer.
"No, the memory came slowly but it came while I was there." I answered. "I made sure he knew he was going to be trialed properly. My mother and Lady Choi, who is heavily pregnant had no part in this. You must leave them out of it, please, I had the opportunity to let this go quietly but I did what was right despite..."
I couldn't continue but I don't think there was a need to.
The King nodded and stood up. I felt the air around him change. His hand came down to my shoulder.
