I slept in the clutches of Peter and woke up in the middle of the night in my sleeping bag. The sky was blowing a slight breeze through the tress and around my tent. I sat up, grabbed my backpack, and dug through it for my flashlight. I found it and took it out, clicking the button on the back to turn it on. I held the flashlight in my hand and looked around my tent. It was empty but the front of the tent was only half zipped. I got up and unzipped it the rest of the way. I peeked out of the hole and moved my flashlight from left to right around the camp. I didn't see anyone out of their tent but I heard rustling coming from someone's tent. I knew I shouldn't be out of my tent that late at night but I had no clue why someone would be moving around that much. I decided to go investigate the situation, so I got out of my tent, still holding my flashlight firmly in my hand, and started walking toward the noise. It lead me to Adams tent. I didn't want to scare him but I didn't want him to stop what he was doing to make me clueless. I clicked my flashlight off and quietly walked up to his tent. I saw that he had some kind of light source on, like he was trying to find something. I walked to the very front of his tent and opened his tent door, turning my flashlight on again. I looked at what he had in his hands. He was packing to go somewhere.
"Adam..." I started to say quietly so I wouldn't wake anyone else up. "What are you doing?" I looked around his tent. David was there in the corner sitting with his stuff packed up, looking at me. "What are you doing?" I waited for a response. "I'm expecting an answer from one of you, I hope you know that." I waited longer. "Where are you going, Adam?" He stood up and got out of his tent.
"I'm going to see if we can get out of here somehow. Now, I know it sounds crazy..."
I interrupted him, "That is so crazy. Adam, we came out of the end of a portal. How are you supposed to find that when it disappeared when we got here?"
"I don't know, but I'm taking David and he is so much smarter than me. And he's still coming with me."
"I don't care who's going. No one is going anywhere when there is nothing to be looking for except maybe your death."
"I think it'll be an adventure. We'll get to know the place more and we'll see if anyone is willing to help these two dudes that are out of their minds."
I sighed and looked at Adam in a disappointed manner.
"We'll be fine out there. I promise. If we don't find anything in a few days, we'll come back," he convinced me. I know he didn't like hugs, but I gave him one anyway.
"Just promise me you'll be careful."
"I promise."
"And come back in a few days, even if you don't find anything," I said looking him in the eye, putting even more pressure on him.
"Yes, I promise."
"Okay, I guess you can go." I let go of him and let him back into his tent to finish packing what he needs. I looked inside and stared directly at David.
"You and Adam, better come back after a few days of being out there."
"Okay. For sure." David was always a reassuring answer. I appreciate his obedience and caution.
"Tell me when you're leaving, okay?"
"Okie dokie," David responded. Adam nodded. I walked back to my tent and sat down on my sleeping bag, waiting for them to say their goodbyes. To pass the time, I looked through my backpack to see if there was anything else that might be useful in the near future. In the small zipper, there was a roll of gaws and a tube of antibiotics. In the next zipper there was a pair of sunglasses, but being out here and looking at my future of sunglasses, I knew they wouldn't last that long out here. I heard 2 pairs of footsteps coming toward my tent. Adam flipped my door open and crawled inside. David did the same shortly after.
"We're leaving..." Adam whispered. "I know you don't like it that we're going out there by ourselves," he said to me, sincerely. I put my pack to the side and looked at them, then down at the floor. I didn't know what to feel. David got on his knees and crawled over to me. He wrapped his arms around me form my right side. I hugged back and smiled.
"We'll be fine, Courtnee," David whispered to try to ensure to me that they would be as safe as possible.
"I trust you, David. Just keep and eye on Adam for me," I said, sarcastically. David let go of me and wobbled back to the place he sat down before. "I'll miss you both. I just worry that you'll get hurt.
"We'll be very careful, we promise," Adam said with a sincere tone.
I nodded and looked at them both. "Well, you better go before I change my mind about it," I said with a little chuckle. They both got up before I did, and got closer to the exit of the tent. I followed them out the opening and Adam stood by and waited for a goodbye hug. He came in for a hug. I hugged him back. "Please, promise me you'll come back?"
"Yeah," he whispered back to me. He let me go, held my arms, and looked at me in the eyes. "I promise." His hands slipped off my arms and a few seconds after they walked, David looked back and waved at me. I waved back at him and smiled as a small tear ran down my face. I almost couldn't see them through the darkness of the night when I decided to go back in my tent and sleep. I flipped open my sleeping bag and climbed inside. I pulled the flap over me and zipped it up the side. I couldn't sleep much that night but I did get some. I just hope they'll be okay out there.
