I felt myself breathe out a sigh of relief as I sat on my bed. It has been a long day. The box that Dave gave me lay on my desk looking at me as if begging me to open it. We went back to grab the desk table and brought it to the orphanage with us. When we got back here Ricky and a few others whom names I forgot set the table up for me. The curiosity inside of me was enticing me to open the box. I took a deep breath and stood up.
I briskly walked toward my door and shut it. I then walked the box so quickly that you would have thought someone was going to take it from me. I sat down in the cool wooden seat and took a deep breath as I pulled the keys from my pocket. I took the key and inserted it in the lock. I turned the key until I heard the familiar click and the lock popped off. I felt my head jerk to the left and then right up again.
One day I'll get a hold of this and conquer this. One day, I thought as I felt my head jerk to the left again filling me with determination. I lifted the top to the box hearing a creak from the hinges. I took a deep breath and peered inside at the contents. I pulled out what looked like a manila folder. I pealed back the opening and saw multiple papers. My birth certificate, passport and ID lay in the envelope. It also had two envelopes inside. I lifted one of them up only to almost drop it because of the weight. I looked around to make sure no one was watching and tore it open. I felt tears well up in my eyes. The envelope was filled with cash. There had to be over five thousand dollars in it.
You can do this. Just breathe. I thought to myself trying to reassure that I am okay. I took a deep breath and let it out in a whooshing sound. I got up from my seat and walked toward my closet. I reached up and pulled the box down that was at the very top. I slipped the envelope inside just incase someone tried to steal it. I then walked out the closet locking it behind me. I then walked over to the box and sat back down in the seat. I took the manila folder out of the box and slid it into the drawer in the desk I was sitting at. I then peered into the box and saw a small box along with other things. I reached in and pulled out the small black box.
I gently opened it and saw a silver necklace with a purple stone dangling from the chain with engravings on it. I pulled it closer to my eyes and it read, Legacy, you'll never know how much I love you, Daddy.
I pulled the necklace on and crawled in my bed. I took a deep breath and sobbed. I wept for my dad. I bawled for my mom. I sobbed for the wasted childhood. I cried for everything. For the first time I finally accepted reality. I heard footsteps rushing to my door. I heard pounding on the door and the screams of my name. I only screamed louder and cried harder. I heard Chris scream my name.
"Go away!" I cried.
"You know I can't do that" I heard Chris say roughly.
"Yes you can! Just leave me be." I retorted.
"Just open the damn door! I can't leave you like this. Legacy please." Chris quaked.
I sighed lifting myself off my bed. I walked over to the door unlocking it. The door then swung open so quickly I barely had time to move.
"Are you ok? Did something happen? Legacy what is it?" Chris stammered hugging me with everything he had.
"I-I'm ok. Just shaken up a bit. Nothing really." I answered.
"Don't you even give me that shit Legacy, what's going on?" Chris responded sternly looking me in the eyes.
"I-I opened the box. I-it had so much in it. So much I-I didn't expect to see." I stammered.
"Can I see the box? That's only if you don't mind." Chris inquired.
I lead him to my desk where he then began to look inside the box.
