I woke up to Chris snoring loudly. I stifled a laugh and sat up running a hand through my hair. I smiled and touched the necklace around my neck. Chris snored loudly making me giggle. I rolled my eyes and looked the clock on my wall. It read 8:30am.
I walked in my bathroom and began brushing my teeth. I left the door open just in case Chris called me or woke up. I leaned down to spit out the minty mixture and felt two slender arms snake around my waist and warm breath on the back of my neck. I looked in the mirror and saw Chris smiling and blushing.
"Good Morning" Chris murmured.
"Good Morning" I replied rinsing my mouth and turning to look at him. His hands rested on my hips as I laid forehead on his chest. I looked up at him and laughed loudly.
"What?" he asked looking at me confused.
"Your hair. It's everywhere!" I laughed.
"Hey! Your hair is just as bad!" He laughed running his hands through his hair attempting to fix it.
"C-can I do your hair and makeup?" I inquired.
"Hell no. I let my sister do my hair and makeup once and I'll never forget the smeared lipstick and bright blue eye shadow all the way to my eyebrows. She put a tiara on my head along with a pink feathered boa." Chris laughed.
"How about we make a d-deal." I asked suddenly serious.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"K-kind of like a bet. You in?" I smirked.
"Yea. What's the bet?" He asked.
"Okay, so let's have a prank war. Whoever is victorious has to let the other do their hair and make up and has to wear it for an entire day." I explained.
"I bet I'll win." Chris replied stoking his imaginary beard.
"I bet I'll win." I challenged. He let his hands drop from my hips and extended his hand.
"It's a bet." He laughed. I took his extended hand and shook it. I shooed Chris out of the bathroom to finish my routine. I walked out fully dressed and ready for the day to see Chris had already left to go get ready. I grabbed my phone and slipped it in my pocket almost dropping it when my hand decided to twinge. I opened the door leading out of my room and bumped right into a skipping Brittany.
"I'm s-so sorry! Are you ok?" I gulped helping Brittany up.
"I'm ok sissy. I was coming to your room to see if you wanted to have a tea party with me. Want to come play?" She giggled.
"I'd love to." I marveled blinking back tears.
"Would you like a piggy back ride to your room?" I asked. Her big blue eyes lit up and she squealed in excitement. I already know the answer. I bent down and helped her into my back. She wrapped her slender legs around my torso and I began to jog to her room earning quite a few amused looks from many people.
"Where do I go?" I laughed
"Go that way!" she sang pointing left. I took a left almost bumping into Ms. Blaze. She began to laugh at the sight and waved.
"Be careful Legacy!" She shouted.
"Yes Ma'am." I belted.
"Okay, we are almost there. It's the that door." Brittany chimed pointing at a door labeled Brittany in pink lettering. I slowed to a stop and picked Brittany up placing her on the ground gently.
"Thank you Legacy! That was awesome! Did you see the look on all of those peoples faces?" She giggled.
"You're so welcome sweetheart. Are you ready to have a tea party?" I smiled opening her bedroom door. She nodded in return and walked in. I looked around and saw a pink bed set in the middle of the room and tons of stuffed animals scattered around the room.
I saw a small radio plugged in the wall and a small table with four chairs around it. The table was painted a purple color with a yellow flower in the middle. The table had yellow, red, blue and pink chairs. Brittany ushered me to blue chair. She then put a teddy bear and a unicorn on the red and yellow chairs.
She placed plastic teacups around the table for each guest including the stuffed animals. She then poured imaginary tea into the cups and took her seat in the pink chair in front of me.
"Here! I think you'll like this." Brittany spoke handing me a bright blue boa.
"Thank you! I absolutely love it." I acknowledged.
"Hey, will you play a song for me? I have a little guitar. My brother gave it to me before he got adopted. Please big sis?" She implored while sipping her fake tea.
"Of course I will. Where's the guitar?" I replied sipping my empty teacup.
"Yay! Thank you! Thank you! Right here. Let me grab it." She cheered dashing to her closet and snatching a red and brown acoustic guitar.
I smiled as she handed me the guitar and took her seat in the pink chair. She pulled her chair closer resting her elbows on the table. I ran my fingers over the strings and hummed a familiar tune.
"What do you want me to play?" I asked giving her a smile.
"I know it's going to sound crazy but, will you play the song, "if it means a lot to you by A Day To Remember? It's my favorite." She requested. I felt my heartstrings pull. That song was my mother's favorite song. She used to sing it to me when I was younger to put me to sleep.
I smiled and began to play.
I let my hands do the work and poured my heart in the lyrics.
My mom's hands caressed my face lovingly as she sang, "If you can wait till I get home." She pulled the blankets up to tuck my eight-year-old self in.
"Then I swear to you that we can make this last." I felt my face begin to get wet with tears as I strummed harder and sang louder.
I heard Brittany begin to sing along with me; " If you can wait till I get home then I swear come tomorrow this will all be in our past." I heard the door creak open and someone walked in.
"I just feel complete when you're by my side." I heard Chris sing looking at me. Chris touched my cheek and placed Brittany on his knee while sitting in the pink chair.
All at once we then began to sing, "We knew it's happen eventually. La, la, la, la, la la. Now everybody's singing la, la, la la, la, la, la."
I lifted my head up from the guitar and saw Chris smiling and Brittany wiping tears from her eyes.
"That was so pretty. My brother loved that song. It was his favorite song to play." Brittany said beginning to sob. I put the guitar on the ground and rushed to her side. I began to wrap my arms around her and sooth her but she pushed me away.
"No. I need to be alone for a little while. I'm sorry sissy. I just need to think that's all." Brittany whispered.
"Are you sure honey? I-I can stay if you want me to. It's no trouble." I quaked.
"Yes legacy. I'm ok I just need to be alone. I love you." Brittany cried hugging me tightly and pushing me out the door.
"I-I love you to darling." I whimpered as she shut the door locking Chris and I out of her room as if creating a barrier between her and me.
I walked to my room with Chris following me. I entered my room and sat on the floor pulling my knees to my chest. Chris sat beside me placing his arms around me pulling me close. I laid my head on his shoulder as he began to hum. He then began to quietly sing Hold on till May by Pierce The Veil.
I smiled and laced my fingers with his. I thought back to my first day here and shuddered. Chris tightened his grip protectively. I felt myself smile a genuine smile. For the first time in years, I felt safe.
