chapter 5

Laura's POV 

We all sat in the car with an awkward silence as Riker drove. Rydel already went school shopping with some of her friends, so she didn't join us. We were about a mile away from the mall when Riker broke the silence.

"So, Ross. Why were you so loud in the morning?" He asked with a slightly agitated tone. Ross rolled his eyes.

"I wasn't being loud, you're just a delusional sleeper." He winked at me. It was actually my fault that he woke up. I was laughing too loudly. I'm surprised Rydel didn't wake up. She always wakes up later than the rest of us.

"Sorry for waking you." I apologized.

"Its fine. I was joking anyways. I should start setting my alarm clock." He smiled.

"Wow. Way to hate your own brother." Ross looked out the window.

"Hey, its normal for brothers to fight. Its how we show our affection." Vanessa and I laughed at that. It was true. Ross and Riker always fought, but at the end of the day they always apologized and forgave each other.

"Oh, we're here!!!" I exclaimed. We all got out of the car and walked towards the mall's entrance.

Vanessa and I hurried to the clothes racks, while Riker and Ross were less enthusiastic as they picked out their clothes. I payed no mind though, for I was  too engrossed in the clothes before me. Vanessa showed me some of the clothes she picked out. We always make sure we don't get the same clothes, so we show each other what we pick out before actually buying them.

"Okay, here's what I picked out." I showed her my clothes as well. She nodded and we went to go purchase our items. Then, we were off to the next store.

Riker POV

Shopping with Ross didn't sound too appealing, so I made sure that we stayed  apart. He seemed to be happy with it, so I shopped on the other side while he stayed where he was. I picked out some outfits and walked towards him to tell him. He was already at the check-out to go, though.

"There you are." I said as I gave my clothing to the register lady. Ross gave me a quick smile as he waited for the lady to be done. She smiled as she handed me my items.

"There you go." She said, but before I could go she stopped me and my brother.

"You guys look so cute together." She gave us another smile.

"oh...ummm, were not together." Ross explained.

"That's what they all say." She laughed. How the heck do we look like a couple?! I'm nowhere being gay, not that I have any problems with gays, but I'm completely straight.

"No, really. We're brothers." I said. She just nodded and smiled. I swear to god, this lady must be mildly retarded or something because she's just not getting it.

My brother and I left the store without another word. "That lady was weird." I mumbled. My brother shook his head in agreement.

Vanessa POV

"So, you ready to meet up with Ross and Riker?" I asked Laura.

"Yeah, did you text them?" she asked.

"Yep, they said to meet them at the north end of the mall where they sell smoothies."

When we reached the Smoothie Palace, we had to wait for a few minutes before the boys showed up. When they did, they didn't seem to be enjoying each other's company.

"Whats wrong?" I asked Riker as he sat down. He gave me a smile.

"Nothing, why?"

"You just seem tense." I explained.

"No, its just another brother quarrel" Ross explained. I nodded my head as if I could understand. Laura and I never fought since our parents death. I guess its because we know you can lose someone at anytime. Its sad, really, but it brought us closer together.

"You guys are always fighting." Laura laughed.

"It was his fault." Riker pointed at his brother who sat next to him.

"Okay, so who wants a smoothie?" I changed the subject.

"ME!" Riker and Ross exclaimed in unison. I laughed as I stood. I walked over to the guy behind the counter and ordered four medium smoothies.

After we finished, we decided to go home. It was already 8 o'clock by the time we reached the car. The car ride home was a lot more fun than the ride there. We stopped to get take-out from Chinese. We got some for Rydel too.

On our way back, Laura ended up falling asleep on Ross. I sat up front with Riker, who was driving.  Laura and Ross are a good pair. I can see how they like each other. I can hear the admiration in their voice when they talk about each other. But what about Riker and I? Do we have the same relationship?

My doubts were put at ease when Riker grabbed hold of my hand and held it. It sent shivers down my spine every time we touched. I then realized that I must really like Riker. I loved this feeling. Just being her with him was enough to keep me alive. I smiled as we held hands.

I must've fallen asleep on the way home because I didn't remember walking into the house on my own. I awoke on the couch. Everyone else was still awake. I could hear Ross and Laura's laughter coming from the kitchen. I looked around the room in a daze until I stopped when I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Riker. He was lying right beside me. I could feel his breath on my neck and his body heat on my back. I was froze. I didn't know what to do. Riker was spooning with me and I just didn't expect it.

"Vanessa?" I heard him whisper in my ear. I almost melted on the spot.

"Y-yes?" I managed.

"You're finally awake. You wanna go to bed yet? I couldn't carry you all the way upstairs, but I didn't want to leave you down here by yourself." he said. It warmed my heart that he'd stay down here with me.

"Yeah, lets go to bed." We went upstairs after telling Laura and Ross we were going to bed. Riker went to go take a shower as I laid down. I didn't have much trouble falling asleep while he was in the shower.

Riker POV

When I came out of the shower, Vanessa was fast asleep. I kissed her forehead and laid down beside her. I fell asleep almost instantly.

Ross POV

Laura and I stayed up until midnight. We were finally in bed by 1:00am. I laid beside her as she slept. I would never tell her this, but she snores really loud. I chuckled quietly before sleep finally took over me.
