I awakened to the sound of my phone ringing.
Isaac.
"Hello? Isaac, is everything ok?"
"No, it's not. My mom is in the hospital because when she was coming home last night she slammed into another truck. Her car flipped over 3 times. They say she's alive, but she's not in the best condition and-" he sobbed in between each breath.
"We're going to the hospital. Where's your dad?" I asked, wondering why he hasn't brought Isaac there yet.
"He was notified last night, so he left me a note and went to the hospital. You don't have to, Hazel," he started.
"I want to, Issac. And you should be there."
"Come on," I said and lead Isaac over to the chair beside his mom, who's slow breaths came in and out heavily.
Isaac's dad had already left for work by the time we got there.
Isaac searched for his mom's hand and clung to it as if it were his last seconds of life.
"Mom, no matter what happens, I love you. I know you love me, too. Mom, you've always been there for me when things got hard. I need you. Please, fight it. You're gonna live."
I thought back to when Augustus told me he would fight it for me. He did fight it. But some fights are lost, and that so happened to be one of them. I feel like I should say something to Isaac's mom, even though I didn't know her that well. I wanted to but I decided to just say something inside my head:
It's been a rough few years for all of us. Isaac's eyes, my lungs, and let's not forget Gus's struggling fight with cancer, only to lose, but win all in the same. He feels no pain where he's at now, it was his time to go. Whether it's your time to go or not, it'll either happen or it won't. Though we'd all rather it not, for it pains us to see you go, stuff happens for a reason. I hope you win this fight.
"I love you too, Isaac," I heard his mom faintly whisper. The biggest smile appeared on Isaacs face. "Mom, you're gonna make it. I know you will. Oh gosh, I love you so much," Isaac began to wipe tears from his face, and I did along with him. I placed my hand on his shoulder, comforting him.
"Stuff happens, Isaac. For a reason. There's a reason your mom won this fight. It was for you."
Isaac's mom has been home from the hospital for a couple of days now. She's banged up, of course, but she's okay. Talking with Isaac has been a little different ever since that night he got the news he was moving. I really hope he doesn't move, though. I've been thinking about it all the time. What it would be like with Isaac gone. No one to laugh, cry, or even talk with. Besides Isaac, my parents are about my only friends. My phone starts buzzing, and I know it's Isaac.
"Hazel Grace Lancaster!" he shouted, extremely loud.
"Isaac, is everything alright?"
"Everything's great! I have the best news," he exclaimed.
"No way. You got a hamster?"
He laughed. "Better than that, Hazel. We're not moving. Mom said she's thought about it a lot and with the accident, you being here, and Augustus, she decided we were staying. My dad will be gone for a couple of months working, though. I'm so happy, Hazel. I mean, I'm not happy my mom got in an accident but I'm overjoyed we're not moving!"
I smiled. "Oh my gosh, Issac. This is great, amazing. I can't tell you how happy I am right now to know you aren't leaving," I said.
"I know, I know. Hazel, would you like to go to dinner tonight?" he asked.
"Oh, Issac," I thought for a moment then said," I'd love to."
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This chapter is a little bit on the shorter side for me, but I hope you enjoy it! Everything's going good, for now.
Isaac's mom is okay, he's not moving, and him and Hazel are going on a little "date"
