Chapter Ten
(Dylan's POV)
I push my mate behind me, feeling her fists clench the material of my shirt. I growl deeply and mind link my beta, Tom.
Make sure Gamma Patrick orders the women and children get to the safe room and STAY there. Triple check that the doors are locked. While you're doing that, I want you to mind link all of the warriors and tell them to prepare themselves for a battle. I want ten of them in front of Tibia's house, eight in front of the safe room, and four personally with Lilah and Chloe. Tell them to be a mile away from the pack house in ten minutes or they'll get their asses kicked by their Alpha.
Yes, Alpha. Tom responds, pushing his joking personality aside so he can be the beta I trained him to be. I mind linked the guards already and they told me there are about fifteen of them. We can easily take them, but I'm worried about rabies and other diseases they might carry with them.
Mind link the pack doctors and make sure they are ready to treat the injured. I'll see you in the clearing in ten minutes.
I put up walls around my mind so Tom and Patrick can set to work on preparing for attack. Normally, I would take charge and personally accompany the women and children to the safe room, but my little mate decided to barge into my life like a wrecking ball, forcing me and my wolf to do a complete one-eighty.
I'll kill every single one of those bastards with my bare paws, my wolf growls, Mate will not get one scratch on her pale, perfect skin.
Agreed. I respond, turning around to face a frightened Chloe.
"Stay here," I order, brushing a wavy lock of blonde hair away from her face. Her fingers pull me closer and hold my hand to her face, her blue eyes gazing into mine. At that precise moment, my four warriors, along with Lilah, decide to burst into my study.
I nod at them. "If you allow those rogues to harm one hair on Chloe's head, I will personally kill you myself."
"Yes Alpha," they respond immediately, fear instilled in their eyes as their posture turns rigid.
"Hey, what about me?" Lilah pipes up, offended.
I roll my eyes, "And her, too. You get the point. Take them to the back. There's not enough time to put them in the safe room with the rest of the women and children."
They immediately oblige, disappearing behind my many bookshelves to find my hidden safe room. I start to walk away, determined to beat the shit out of those rogues when Chloe pulls me back. I turn around to face her, entranced by the sparks that emit when our skin touches and the perfection that is her.
"Dylan?"
"Don't you worry your pretty little head, baby. I'll be back soon. Just please stay where you're told and don't move. I couldn't bare it if anything happened to you." I cup her face in both of my large hands and watch in wonder how her eyes flutter shut. She pulls me into a hug and I don't hesitate to wrap her in my arms, savoring the feeling of my sweet little mate encaged in my embrace, protected from all harm.
"Don't forget to keep yourself in one piece," she attempts to joke, but I notice the slight hitch in her voice when brings a dagger of pain into my heart.
I press my lips to her forehead, leaving them there for a few seconds. She clings onto me so tightly that her nails dig into my back. I pull away unwillingly and nearly break when I notice unshed tears filling her crystal blue eyes. I gesture with my head to the back of the room.
