"Danielle, it's not what it looks like."

Darwin was the first one to respond to Sasha's news.
"What?" He said.
Though Dani thought the same, a single word of full confusion and disbelief in equal proportions, she found herself incredibly silent and staring at her bestfriend instead.
"What?" Darwin repeated, glancing at Dani to seemingly assess her reaction alongside his own.
Dani opened her mouth then, but her voice remained to herself. Before them the light skinned girl who had taken on the role of morning messenger didn't laugh. It wasn't joke.
Another white guy? In Weaver? Oh the improbability of it all was deafening.
It wasn't that it was prohibited for Caucasians to settle in the community, but for years it had seemed to be an unwritten rule. Samuel Thompson was the only exception.
Realzing that Dani wouldn't say anything Darwin refocused on Sasha and commanded, "Say sike right now."
"Can't," Sasha widened her eyes at him, "I am not kidding. I just heard from Liana."
And at the mention of the rastafarian girl Dani fell out of her disbelief and back into the conversation.
"Oh okay," Dani elbowed Darwin, "For a second she almost had me."
"Yeah, yeah. And then she said Liana. Now I'm like..."
Dani laughed and soon Darwin joined in as they mocked their own naivity. Slowly, they sobered up and simultaneously looked back at Sasha again which of course made Sasha roll her eyes.
"You don't believe?"
A moment passed.
"No," Darwin said as the same time Dani said, "I rather believe the moon is cheese."
"Are you serious?"
Dani calmly placed her palms on Sasha's shoulders and looked deeply into her eyes, "Sasha, you my home girl so I'll be gentle as I say this. There is no day that I'll believe Liana Bailey. No day."
Darwin nodded from behind Dani, "That girl gossips like it's a hobby."
"For her it is, if you think 'bout it." Dani pointed out to him.
Sasha huffed, "She's not lying, this time. I think. I'm a believer of the people, Dani."
"And that disgusts me."
"Come on," Sasha practically begged, "Liana just told me that she saw this white guy at the supermarket yesterday and he said he was coming to Weaver High."
Dani made a face, "To look at it or..."
Darwin grunted, "I don't understand, so she knows him?"
