(Hello, my lovelies! I got an idea for a little one shot with the Hanahaki disease..~ "Hana," I remember for some reason, means "Flower" in japanese. The Hanahaki disease is a (fake) disease when the victim is in love, but they either don't know they're loved back or the love is unrequited (not returned). Anyway, a flower blooms in the victims chest, and the victim will cough up petals occasionally either until death or their love is returned)
(Enjoy~)Gladion's POV
I wake up. Instantly, I feel my heart constrict. It's been doing that a lot recently, though I'm not sure why. I haven't told anyone. Nobody, not yet. It couldn't have possibly been that important, right?
All of a sudden, I lose the air in my lungs, and I start to gasp for air. Something feels like it's growing in my chest, literally growing between the bones of my ribcage.
Seconds later, I start hacking and coughing. What I didn't expect was to see a small, pale pink petal float into my hands. My head goes numb.
What was happening to me? Did a pokémon do this somehow? Was there a cure? Would I die? I clutch the front of my shirt, breathing hard from the lack of air, and crush the petal in my palm.
I'm fine.
Letting the crumpled petal fall on to my bed and out of my hand, I sit up and walk to my dresser. I start to undress, but I have to take a second to pause in order to keep myself from falling over. I got lightheaded.
I just stood up too fast.
Sighing, I peel off my nightshirt and put on my hoodie that's been worn so many times I've lost count. Usually, I'd wear a shirt underneath, but I fear I'd suffocate.
It's just the muggy weather.
Trying to reassure myself in every way I can, I finish getting dressed and head out of my room. I see Lillie's room across from mine and sigh. It comes out strangled and weak, but I sigh anyway.
Eventually, I make it out of there and off of the island. There was nothing to do there, after all. As soon as I see Y/N in one of the clothes stores, I slow to a hault.
Whatever was happening to me, it made me feel weirder around him. I try to swallow, but I cough instead. The small cough evolves into an onslaught of hacking, gasping, wheezing, and more coughing.
I see Y/N running towards me as I fall to my knees, and suddenly, my stomach flips. I throw up. But I never ate anything today. Instead, petals and petals and petals pour out.
It hurts.
Y/N's POV
I was starting to run out of good summer clothes, so today, I went to see the clothing store as soon as I'd gotten dressed. It was no longer than a few moments after I find something that I see Gladion from the store window. I smile at him, but something wasn't right.
He started to cough. At first, I thought he was fine, but it gradually became worse and worse. The second he drops to his knees, I run. To my horror, he collapses in a pile of petals that he'd coughed up himself.
People are gathering around and trying to look around for anybody that'd help. It doesn't take long for me to kneel down and scoop him up.
"Gladion? Hey, come on, wake up." People begin to talk. I can't focus, so I carry Gladion away from everyone and back to my house. He still doesn't budge.
Fearing that I was carrying a dead man, I stop in my tracks and press my ear to his chest to listen for a heartbeat.
I hear it.
It's strong and fast, but it's being muffled by something. He's alive. As soon as I get in my room, I place him on my bed and shake him awake, "Hey! Gladion! Come on, wake up!"
His eyes open, but they're clouded by some kind of pink haze. He opens his mouth to talk, closes it, and tries again. "Y/N?" "You collapsed after hurling up petals. What is that? Why did that even..?"
He starts crying, and that makes me shut up immediately. Gladion was always a quiet crier. As tears gathered in his eyes and blurred his vision, he did nothing but stare at me with pink, glossy eyes. I miss their green color so much it aches.
"Gladion, what.. What's wrong?.." I mutter as I watch him wipe away the tears with his palms.
He shakes his head and grabs at my shirt, pulling it towards himself and forcing me to come closer. The next thing I know, he's crying into my stomach like a child as he sat on the bed.
Slowly, I lift my hand to place on top of Gladion's head, trying my best to comfort him. "It's alright... I promise. Everything's going to be fine, okay?"
He nods into my stomach with slightly trembling shoulders. I've never seen Gladion, let alone anybody else in my life become this vulnerable over anything.
When I least expect it, his arms tighten around me. He swallows hard, as if it took a great amount of effort to do so, "Y/N.." He mumbles, "I'm in love with you. Please don't hate me, please don't think I'm joking, I love you."
I'm so caught off guard that I don't answer quick enough, and Gladion looks like he's going to cry a river with those pink tinted eyes. Panicking, I start rubbing circles into his back.
"Hey, hey, hey," I sigh, "Calm down, okay? It's okay... What's going on?" I try to go back to petting his hair, but he pushes me away from him. I don't know why, but I find out right after.
He keels over and coughs up an entire flower, but not quite. It's in his mouth, and it's staying there, no matter how much Gladion tries to cough it out. It's suffocating him. Petals are flying everywhere, and I've never felt my adrenaline spike so fast.
"Gladion, oh god-" I'm starting to cry, too. He's gagging and I know he was going to pass out soon from the lack of air. I hold him. I hold him as tight as I can, pressing him to my chest.
"Gladion, stay with me okay? Stay awake-" His eyes are drooping shut. I shake him and they snap open again, but not for long. "Please, Gladion, don't.. I love you, come on, I don't know what's hap-"
Gladion goes into another coughing fit. The flower wilts and dies, and suddenly, it falls from his mouth and seems to deteriorate as it does so.
The petals that flew out with it fall into little pieces, disintegrating, and they dissapear in an instant.
Gladion is left breathing hard, in and out, over and over. The pink is completely gone from his eyes, and I've never felt happier. I hug Gladion tight, just as tightly was before.
He groans at me and attempts to push me away, "What are you doing, I'm not dying anymore, calm down." His voice is raspy and broken.
"I'm just happy you're alive, Gladion. I love you so much, you know that, right?" I see his face turn red, and he coughs up the last of the petals that fall away into nothing as they hit the air.
"Just... Whatever. I feel like shit..." He swallowed thickly, "I want to sleep." "In my bed?" "... Yes." He mumbled, and I nod a little bit, kissing the side of his face. "You can rest, but don't fall asleep just yet. Let me cook you something, okay? Can you eat?"
"Probably.." Gladion muttered, coughing slightly and rubbing his throat. It looked like he had a fever from whatever just happened.
"Good... I'll make something special. You have a fever. Just lie down, alright?" "Whatever.." He responded, eventually pulling away from my arms to hug my pillow instead. I give his hair a small pet before getting up and heading to the door.
"... Does this mean we're... um..?" Gladion is struggling with his words. I turn my head to look at him, and I chuckle, "Of course. Now stop worrying and relax."
"... Alright.."
"I'll be right back, Love."
"Don't call me that."
"Okay, Love?"
".... Okay."
